Ice and Helmets

Ice and Helmets

On the bottom of the picture, you can see three climbers coming down. The climber on the left of the three had his helmet smashed and head gashed open from an ice boulder coming off of the cliffs on the South Side of Hood. We could hear the ice and rock crashing down, and everyone on the South Side yelled a warning. The gentleman wasn't in its path, but when it got close to him it flew up in the air and smashed down on his helmet. After gathering his senses, he said he was okay and decided to head back down. After retracing his path later in the day and seeing all of the blood, it reminded me of why we wear helmets. May 9, 2008 Mount Hood, Oregon
