Great photo. I never tire of looking at elk. They are majestical, strong and smart.
Thanks. He definitely had all of those attributes. He was with a young bull, maybe two years old (?), who he seemed to be protecting. I cropped the young one out of this shot, he was standing off to the right. I felt that this captured the majesty better.
beats those I saw up at the Grand Canyon.
Hey, at least you captured a mountain in the
background, so I'm giving it 10/10 !
Thanks. This guy was big. It's nice that the Park Service put him in such a photogenic location!
Yes, don't we all just completely and
unconditionally love the NPS ???
Yes, truly an iconic scene!
Thanks Bob. I've spent a lot of time in RMNP but this was quite the lucky find. I had to move down the trail a bit to get Longs into the frame, but the elk patiently stayed put, not moving off until I had snapped a few shots.
one of my favorites
Thanks, anita. You gone for a while, no? Nice to hear from you, appreciate the comment. Hope all is well.
Thanks for the comment Lolli. Appreciate it. He was actually hanging out with another, younger elk.
This is an amazing shot. I love how you were able to catch Longs in the background.
Thanks, it was a lucky deal. My friend was starting to take pictures as we were coming down on to the elk, with just some trees and distant valley in the background. I saw the situation and moved down farther and off to the side before shooting, so I could include Longs.
I'm using this outstanding image on the National Parks list page. Let me know if that's a problem. --mark d.
Thanks very much for selecting this photo. Much appreciated. Take care, Nelson
I'm not sure which is better, the elk or the shot of Longs. Incredible Pic!
Thanks for your comment! It was a lucky encounter for sure. I had to scramble into the right position standing on some rocks, but the elk cooperated by not moving off until I squeezed off a couple of shots.
just for your photo? great capture!
Thanks Liba. Yes, he was posing for me! I tried to get him to do a Virabhadrasana III like your profile photo, but he would have none of it.
