Re: The best of a seriesThanks Vid. The scenery and atmosphere were great. Could you imagine that I havent seen a single person in the mountains that day, and it was already a June - though the last year snow remained until late so shepherds were doing their transhumanca (izdig) later in June.

Re: The best of a seriesYes Vid, izdig is common word for going to high mountain pastures with cattle in spring, in Dinaric region (I would say used from Velebit towards south). Izdig is funny word, I like it, describes the action well. On the other hand I never heard of transhumanca?! Probably local word there?

In Kucka krajina, in line with tradition, there has always been a Kuchi klan session (plemenska skupstina - klan meeting) somewhere in mid or late june when they joinly decid on what date the izdig would begin. On that decided day people would move from their permanent settlements in lower laying areas (when temperatures there rise to unbearable highs, and there is a lack of water and fresh grass), together with all of theirs livestock, kids, pets (dogs of course) and stuff, and head for katuns, their summer settlements high in cooler mountain areas.
Transhumanca, Sasha, on the contrary is not the local term but a broader one, it is a scientific term for such periodical movements that are known among shepherds in all of Mediterranean circle. The movements like izdig were also known in spain, Italy, Greece, Albania..
