It's there  Sucess!

Long drive across Idaho. Legs need to be stretched be attempting the difficult. Inferno cone give you a nice .75 RT up and down to shake off the car sloth. Plus really pretty views.

Do it.

windy  Sucess!

It’s a quick hike, but gives you a good view of the area. Tough old tree at the top on the eastern side.

Neat  Sucess!

Nice little walk. Great views of the area. Must say this whole area is incredible. Went through all the caves later in the day. Not sure how this area was off my radar for so long. Also, the entry fee is $20, not $8. Interagency Pass works here as well!

Cool Little Hike  Sucess!

I was enroute to view the total solar eclipse in the Painted Hills area of Oregon, following much of the path of the eclipse across Nebraska, Wyoming, Idaho and Oregon when I stopped at Craters of the Moon National Monument. Took this short hike to the summit since it seemed thematically appropriate for my trip.

Beautiful Monument  Sucess!

Great little cinder cone. Wanted to climb Big Cinder Butte, but didn't have the time or energy. Ice caves and wilderness trails were definitely the highlight of the trip.

Inferno Cone  Sucess!

I had to drop off my daughter in Boise, so Kessler and I decided to take the slightly longer way home and do some hikes and climbs on the way home. We didn't arrive at our destination until around 2 AM and we didn't get much sleep at my sister in law's house that night since cats kept jumping on our face when we were sleeping on the floor. We left just after 7 AM.

We drove to Craters of the Moon National Monument and did all the hikes we could before it was time to push on to Mackay (Idaho). It was extremely windy and we were worried about climbing Borah the next day. As soon as I set my backpack down it blew away and I had to chase it!

First we hiked up Inferno Cone (which was smaller than I thought it would be), then we hiked around and up Snow Cone and the Spatter Cones before going to and hiking the Broken Top Loop (which happened to be the best of the hikes). With headlamps, we explored the Buffalo Caves as well. We also did a side trip to the top of one of the cinder cones.

After the Broken Top Loop, we hiked the trail to the tree molds which were made when hot lava hit some live trees. We then did the Caves Trail and visited all the caves except for Boy Scout (time ran out), but we thought the Buffalo Caves were neater.

After hiking all those trails, it was time to go. It was a good day, but we were very tired after driving to Boise and getting almost no sleep.

Windy Day!  Sucess!

50mph winds with a beautiful sunny view. Make sure to visit the spatter cones when you're there.

Cone  Sucess!

While biking around the park loop, I stopped long enough to hike the cinder trail and see the elevated views. It's a neat place.

Fun trip  Sucess!

I don't remember what year it was when I did it. My family took a trip to Craters in April and we climbed it then. It was really quite cold that day but it was a lot of fun.

I'm pretty sure I did this one...  Sucess!

I visited the Craters Nat. Mon. in 1996 and we did the usual day-long drive and hikes, including a long tunnel and a small hilltop. This is probably it since I do recall it being just as described in the write-up. Neat place overall.

Inferno Cone  Sucess!

I did the short walk to Inferno Cone in July 1997 and Sept 16, 2004. Most people who visit Craters of the Moon go up the cone so it seems to be popular.
