International Boundary

International Boundary

While waiting in line at the Chief Mountain Customs Station—the normal summer route between Glacier and Waterton (it's closed in winter)—to cross into Canada I didn't even have to get out of the car to take this one. The 49th Parallel isn't just a line or indication of political thought drawn on maps, it's a real swath cut through the land! That's the U.S. on the left, Canada on the right. And for anyone interested in crossing this line through the forest, things have changed dramatically since 9/11—a passport makes it MUCH easier.
