Enjoyed the ridge between the two peaks though I was breaking in a new pair of boots and kept tripping over things. Brief section of Class 3 moves was on solid rock and not at all exposed - very pleasant.
We decided to drop down to the lake at 9200' just NE of the summit and traverse back to the PCT under Dicks Peak. This I would not recommend due to constant crappy loose rock along the traverse, but we did get a nice glissade in, a blessing for late July in California anymore.
Day 2. We woke up at Gilmore Lake and leisurely made our way up the PCT to access the ridge to Dicks Peak. We started the 'scramble' up to the summit and quickly noticed multiple groups ascending the ridge. I counted 15 or so people and a dog. To our knowledge, not one of them actually tried to climb Dicks. Not really sure what they were all doing there. We enjoyed lunch on a windless peak before traversing the saddle to Jacks Peak. While doing so thunder started rolling miles to the south around the Mokelumne Wilderness. We had enough time for Jacks, but we stopped the leisurely pace. Forcing class 3 up to Jacks was fun, but once we made the summit we found the highpoint and headed down straight away. Our goal was to make it to the north shore of Aloha, but found an incredible campsite on the south slopes of Jacks near a tarn, so we set up camp. Immediately we were hit with heavy rain, and we jumped into our tents for a 30 minute rest. The rain stopped, the skies cleared, and we enjoyed a very relaxing evening looking down upon Lake Aloha.
Up the north face of Dicks then a ridge walk over to Jacks. Beautiful day but super windy. Enjoyable scrambling on both peaks with stunning views of desolation.
Great quick night hike in the snow!
1.12 Miles, 1400' ele. gain
Solo loop over Jacks and Dicks on a beautiful spring morning.
Long day hitting all four peaks (Tallac, Dicks, Jacks, and Pyramid) from Glen Alpine.
Round trip from Glen Alpine, went to Dicks then Jacks, descending down Jacks SE face to meet the PCT which took us back to the Glen Alpine trail. Trip report is HERE
Short traverse from Dicks with just a few moves of easy Class 3 along the way. The descent down the talus to Half Moon Lake was not fun.
Continuing Pyramid to Tallac traverse. Trip report.
Climbed along with Dicks Peak from Bayview trailhead
Day hike from Glen Alpine to Jacks and then traversed across to Dicks.
Backpacking trip through desolation. Decided to hike over some peaks instead of going the long way around! Traversed over from Dicks peak and then down to Aloha Lake.
Nice hike and great views on E side of Crystal Range with quite a bit of snow still lingering from previous week's storm. Pretty windy but it only made it bearable; very hot when calm.
Very long but beautiful day - doubled up with Dicks Peak. Total of 17 miles hiked but very glad I did it.
In from Eagle Falls trailhead, did not see a soul all day. Cloudy, cold, and windy, but outstanding views everywhere. Really enjoyed the ridge over from Dicks Peak.
Solo day-hiked up from Horsetail Falls, across a mostly dry Lake Aloha, and up class 3 granite to high point 1/2 south of summit. Had an enjoyable traverse along the ridge to summit. Went down via Mosquito pass. Car to car 8 hours.
Nice snowshoe outing for my second visit. Trip Report
Same day. Good safe, healthy place for teenage boys to stay out of trouble.
This was a fun solo traverse of some major peaks in desolation wilderness. Started and finished at Lake of the Woods.
S face from Lake Aloha and fun winter ridge scramble.
