Easy and clear
W/Michelle. Climbed essentially the NE ridge from the mine turnoff parking area, but descended SE off the summit on an undulating ridge then down into trees all the way down to a dirt road, then walked the road N back to car. Allowed for a loop tour. Nice weather.

We awoke to -24F (-31C) at Janet's Cabin. The skies were mostly sunny though. Kessler and I set off for the summit of Jacque Peak, 13,211 feet/4027 meters elevation.
Since I had broken the trail to Searle Pass the day before, we made faster time to the pass than I did on the previous day. Once we were at the pass, it was windy and cold again.
After a very brief break at the pass to get some water, we headed up the ridge towards Jacque Peak. The ridge had pretty good snow conditions, but there were a few places where the snow was deep and a few place where the wind had blown off the snow leaving exposed rock.
Kessler was moving faster than me, but he would have to find a place sheltered from the wind in order to wait for me since it was so cold.
The ridge seemed much longer than expected and when we got to the major false summit (almost a mountain in itself), at 12,660 feet, it was disheartening to see how much further the summit still was. We also had to descend a fair distance before climbing up towards the true summit.
The route to the summit was also more difficult than we expected and we had some steep rock scrambling, which was tedious since there were areas of soft snow between the rocks.
Eventually we made our way up another false summit and to the true summit. It was a hard earned summit, but the wind was just screaming. I calculated the windchill to be -54F (-48C) on the new chart and -81F (-63C) on the old!
We didn't spend much time on the summit, but got a hot drink (we had brought it up in a thermos) and ate a very brief lunch. Other than our brief break at Searle Pass, this was our only rest.
The views were absolutely spectacular and we could see much of the Gore Range and Sawatch, as well as the other surrounding mountain ranges. Still, with the cold, we didn't spend much time on the summit. We headed back down the mountain using the same route, but we found a better way through the rock scrambling section and avoided much of it.
It was a very spectacular climb, but very cold, and the ridge was much longer than we thought it would be. The rest of the group was happy to see us when we stumbled into the cabin.
It stayed well below zero all day, even at the cabin.

Graveline Gulch to Tucker Gulch
Found someone's tracks on another website that avoided all mine property entirely. Traverse from Graveline Gulch (a gulch on my Garmin map just north of Tucker Gulch) would have been tricky route finding except for having the tracks. Gorgeous fall day, added in Tucker Mtn. on the way back.
Climbed up the east ridge via the ski resort with Brian and Rick. We roughly following the American Flyer lift then worked our way up to the ridge. Skied down the SE face, short climb up Tucker, down "The Nacho" ski run, and up a service road to the Union/Copper saddle and easy cruiser run back to the village. Had to cross the plowed out service road, but otherwise continuous snow the whole day.

Wasn't sure what the people around would do, but I started hiking up a ski run angling towards the ridge closest to Jacque.
Last peak of the day of a multi-day long trip.
Was looking for an easy tundra walk after Drift.
Good views for a low 13er. Sure didn't 'feel' like a Gore Range peak though.

Was great to ski up and down a mountain after busting my ass in grad school while working full time for 8 months. Went up with Craig. Got about 6000 feet in from Copper. Very mellow ridge from Copper. Great views of the Gore.

yeah, that's what we encountered this veteran's day. it's lovely seeing that hiking is easier but the lack of snow is starting to become depressing.

SE ridge to NE ridge w/ Tucker
Copper was open, but the back bowls were dry so no ski patrol to worry about. Ascended the SE ridge via CO 91 and a Climax service road then made the traverse all the way around to Tucker Mountain and back down through Tucker Gulch. Great views, this "low 13er" has over 2000' of prominence and it shows!

Did a little navigation through the woods to get onto Tucker Mountain and then up the ridge. Nice day! Some snow to avoid.

up s.e. ridge, down n.e. ridge
After wallowing in sugar snow on New Years day which led to an abort, I tried it again, this time via the s.e. ridge. The snow was great and we moved well this time. When down the n.e. ridge and over Tucker on the way down. Tucker is off limits during ski season.

Route Climbed: Copper Mountain Ski Resort via Union Mountain Date Climbed: August 1, 2004I did this with the Colorado Mountain Club. We cheated a bit by taking the lift about halfway up. Views are spectacular from up there.
