Jason Moore dwarfed by an ancient pine near the summit of Estes Cone. 09 SEP 2004. The trail, which travels up the west side of the mountain, disappears and reappears. What would be otherwise an unremarkable trail is well marked by hundreds of those little rock piles known in Gaelic as carns, or to those of us more modern folk as cairns. This is to the credit of those many of us who are well schooled in the care and feeding of cairns, that have, after all, a sacred place in the hearts of all true mountaineers.
