Re: Just curious...The Yosemite Decimal system, YDS for short, 5.0 to 5.15 (presently) is one of the systems to measure difficulty. It's used in Western US, Canada, and other places. Developed on Tahquitz Rock in Southern California in early 1950s by climbers who then brought it to Yosemite. We shorten the number in conversations, drop the 5 (which stands for class 5 ) and use the numbers after the decimal point only. Hence 7. 8, 9, 10 (for 5.7 etc). The system was further segmented after 5.10, into A,B,C,D. This was done because much smaller increases in difficulty were still needed to be taken into consideration, even if it didn't require complete number change. So the Right Banana Crack in Joshua Tree might be rated 11B, for 5.11 B. . There are several grading systems used around the world, you might be familiar with the German Sandstone system around Elbe River, The UIAA used in Alps, the British S,VS,HVS system and others.
