Dayhike
Finally got the opportunity to do the triple crown south of Lake Tahoe. I have had my eye on these peaks, Freel specifically since I started baggin' peaks a few years ago. My main hiking buddy's parents moved to Gardnerville a couple years back and we have been using it as a basecamp for many hikes over the past few years. We finally found the time for this triple and we peaked a fantastic weather day to do it. We went the obvious clockwise direction and were at Freel before we knew it, thinking that it did not feel anywhere as hard as we were expecting. Maybe that's the case, maybe we have had a strong summer so far and this was a weightless dayhike. Freel was packed so we ran down the backside and were atop Jobs Sister in 20 minutes or so, taking the time here to finish our breakfast burritos and rest a bit. The bootski down the backside of Sister was fun, but I almost fell in a couple spots. Jobs was a bit more of a climb than expected, but nothing to complain about. We met some cool people atop Jobs and spent more time than expected up there. We more or less ran back to our car at Horse Meadow with much of the day left to enjoy. To be honest, I must have built this trip up in my head over the years. I didn't really enjoy it as much as expected. Maybe it was the sand or the crowds, maybe we've been on a lot cooler peaks this summer. Whatever it was, they're bagged now and I am happy to have done so.
Did a triple peak bagging hike on Sunday. Jobs Peak is Ogul #18 at 10663', Jobs Sister is Ogul #19 at 10823', and Freel Peak is Ogul #20 at 10881'. Freel Peak is the tallest peak in the Tahoe area. Hiked these with Carley and Lucy from NorCal Women Adventurers.
The hike up to Jobs Peak was steep and steady, but the trail was nicely maintained and shaded in the morning until we got up toward the saddle. Then it was much more desert like, with interesting rock formations along the ridge. We angled up to avoid a steep snowfield on the trail, and stopped for a snack before the push to the summit. We could see the peaks in Mokelumne Wilderness and out toward 395. The view toward Gardnerville was hazy. I think we all started getting headaches as we were now over 10000'. About 2.5 hours after starting, we reached the summit. We signed the register at the top and took pictures before heading back down to the saddle to tackle our second peak.

Jobs (2x) Freel and Jobs Sister
With the dog, climbed Jobs first from Carson Valley and the Fay Luther Trail and up the S Slopes of Jobs. From there descended W to Horse Meadow trying to basically follow the route of the trail, but the hillside remained mostly under a couple feet of snow. Once under the S slopes of Freel, climbed the sandy slopes to the ridge and up Freel. Then did the standard traverse to Jobs Sister and Jobs (2nd time for the day, Jobs still has snow from the Jobs/Jobs Sister saddle). The descent from Jobs this time was to the East down snow with icy patches and along the narrow East ridge to the the satellite peak, then descended the E Gully down to Carson Valley. The total route consists of 17 miles and 9,440 feet of gain. For a map of the route, see this:

Trimmer, Freel's, Job's Sister, Job's Loop
Trimmer, Freel’s, Job’s Sister, and Job’s Peak Loop
Approach:
I drove up Hwy 50 to the junction with Hwy 89 in Myers and headed East towards Luther Pass. 9.6 miles after turning onto Hwy 89 and about .7 of a mile past Luther pass you will take a left on an unmarked forest road (later signs say 051) which is paved for the first couple hundred yards. Stay on this road for 3.4 miles, ignoring many spurs which shoot to the left and right. Stay on road 051. The road was not too rough, and I imagine that it should be fine for most passenger cars. You will cross a cattle grate or two and at 3.4 miles you cross your second small bridge. In about 200 feet there will be a dirt road which heads back and to the left. Rocks block the entrance to this dirt road. Park here.
Hike:
You hike north on this dirt road/trail for about a mile or so and then meet up with the Tahoe Rim Trail. Take the TRT north towards Star Lake. After a series of long switchbacks you will reach the saddle at about 9,700 feet. The traverse to Trimmer Peak is to the left and the trail up to Freel’s Peak to the right. I traversed over to Trimmer’s Peak staying the right of the ridge for the majority of the time. There is no trail, but you need to work your way below the ridgeline. After tagging Trimmer Peak I headed back over to the sign for Freel’s and up to Freel’s Peak. From Freel’s, Job’s Sister is the obvious next stop. Despite looking very close by, the snow from last weekend’s storm and 400-500 foot drop down into the saddle made this take at least a half hour.
Backtracking from Job’s Sister down a few hundred yards to the saddle is a piece of cake, and then it gets a bit more interesting. You will hang a left towards Job’s Peak, and need to slide across the sandy slopes for about a quarter of a mile towards the lower saddle where you see a trail which leads up towards Job’s Peak. I highly recommend wearing good gaiters as the rocks will pour in to your shoes during this diagonal slide down Job’s Sister.
Once done with the sandy slide down Job’s Sister, you will want to stay close to the ridge and pick up the trail, which follows the ridge and curves left towards the summit of Job’s Peak. I went in early November and much of this trail towards Job’s Peak was covered in snow, which made for much slower going.
After gaining the summit of Job’s Peak head down the ridge for about a half mile or so until arriving at a series of large rock outcroppings. At these outcroppings a you will take a left, towards the south, on a trail which leads back down the valley towards Horse Meadows where you originally parked your car. Unless you are wanting to retrace your steps up Job’s Sister and Freel’s, turning left on this trail will save you a lot of time in completing the loop. The trail is surprisingly well marked as it stays to the left side of the valley and drops down quickly among the trees in the forest. After a couple of miles the trail hits the forest road 051. Follow this dirt road for about two more miles until arriving back at your car. The whole route was exactly 12 miles with 3700 feet of elevation gain. I started at 7 a.m. and finished at 12 a.m.

Found the GPS
3 weeks after losing my GPS in the snowstorm, my brother and I set out to find it. Not sure what was more surprising - that we found the device or that it worked (once I put in new batteries) after being exposed to the elements near the summit for 3 weeks. Had an hour of daylight left on the way home so we did the easy hike from Camp Sacramento over to Lovers Leap. Good day all around. TR is HERE.

Snow Day
First snowstorm of the season came overnight and with snow forecast for all day I thought this would be a fun one. Parked on Hwy 89 and walked up the FS road to 8500 feet before going cross country through the snow. Snow was falling all day. Wind and cold temps on top made it somewhat uncomfortable and visibility was terrible. Never even saw Freel or Jobs Sister the whole day. To make matters worse I lost my GPS about a 1/3rd of a mile away from the summit while climbing up the rocks on the ridgeline. Must have gotten buried in the snow. When I got home I saw that the trail stays much lower to the left, so I have minor hope that my GPS will stay in those rocks since they probably aren't climbed frequently. Thankfully I was able to pretty much follow my tracks down. Trip report is HERE.

3 Peak day
Part of a 3 peak trip from Luther Pass, Freel, Job and Job's sister. I think I'll be heading back this winter for some backcountry skiing.
Which trailhead? Is the gate open on the road from just S of Luther Pass?

Faye Canyon Repeat
Did a repeat of the Faye Canyon route with dog. From Job's summit, descended the long ridge to the East Peak, then descended the E Gully. Entire loop, up and down, in 5 1/2 hours. Not another person to be seen. No snow left on either route.

Able to drive to 8900' courtesy of the Jeep. Good trail from there to the top. Beautiful day...spent about an hour lounging on the summit.

Snow Free
Took the Faye-Luther trail from the Carson Valley and then followed the cairns/trail remnants to the summit. Completely snow free, which is remarkable given the date.

Via Faye Canyon
Starting on the Faye-Luther trail system, the dog and I followed the trail up Faye Canyon. Trail gradually fades after a few miles to bits of tread and cairns as it heads up Jobs S Slope. At around 8500 feet, the slope becomes unconsolidated sand and is very tedious. A lot of people were enjoying the cool and windy summit. Headed down Jobs E Slope to the long class 3 ridge that reaches a high point, then descended the E Gully route back to the Faye-Luther trail system. Unknown mileage, but 6,000 feet of gain.

Midnight ClimbLeft the trailhead around 11p and hit the summit at 1am. We had a bright moon and high wind on the ridge but the views were awesome.
