Dayhike
Finally got the opportunity to do the triple crown south of Lake Tahoe. I have had my eye on these peaks, Freel specifically since I started baggin' peaks a few years ago. My main hiking buddy's parents moved to Gardnerville a couple years back and we have been using it as a basecamp for many hikes over the past few years. We finally found the time for this triple and we peaked a fantastic weather day to do it. We went the obvious clockwise direction and were at Freel before we knew it, thinking that it did not feel anywhere as hard as we were expecting. Maybe that's the case, maybe we have had a strong summer so far and this was a weightless dayhike. Freel was packed so we ran down the backside and were atop Jobs Sister in 20 minutes or so, taking the time here to finish our breakfast burritos and rest a bit. The bootski down the backside of Sister was fun, but I almost fell in a couple spots. Jobs was a bit more of a climb than expected, but nothing to complain about. We met some cool people atop Jobs and spent more time than expected up there. We more or less ran back to our car at Horse Meadow with much of the day left to enjoy. To be honest, I must have built this trip up in my head over the years. I didn't really enjoy it as much as expected. Maybe it was the sand or the crowds, maybe we've been on a lot cooler peaks this summer. Whatever it was, they're bagged now and I am happy to have done so.
Did a triple peak bagging hike on Sunday. Jobs Peak is Ogul #18 at 10663', Jobs Sister is Ogul #19 at 10823', and Freel Peak is Ogul #20 at 10881'. Freel Peak is the tallest peak in the Tahoe area. Hiked these with Carley and Lucy from NorCal Women Adventurers.
After hiking Jobs Peak, we headed toward his sister...
The trail over to Jobs Sister was faint, but we headed in a general downward direction. We saw a faint path a few times, but it petered out once we got to the bottom of the saddle. Unfortunately you have to lose about 1000' of elevation between the two peaks. We had some GPS tracks to follow, but we didn't see an obvious path or easy way up. We angled up and left, and the terrain was STEEP. This was a major b to get up and was super exhausting. We had to stop to eat and get more energy. This definitely took us the longest. We finally gained the ridge, and still had to go further up to the summit. However, the views from this peak were stunning! 360 views of Lake Tahoe, Nevada, Mokelumne Wilderness, and Desolation Wilderness. We had lunch up here and took in the views. Couldn't find a summit register though :(. We could see smoke from a fire on the Nevada side, which was probably contributing to the haze we noticed earlier. From here we could see the trail down and up to Freel Peak. It looked steep up the summit, but we were happy just to see a trail! ...

Trimmer, Freel's, Job's Sister, Job's Loop
Trimmer, Freel’s, Job’s Sister, and Job’s Peak Loop
Approach:
I drove up Hwy 50 to the junction with Hwy 89 in Myers and headed East towards Luther Pass. 9.6 miles after turning onto Hwy 89 and about .7 of a mile past Luther pass you will take a left on an unmarked forest road (later signs say 051) which is paved for the first couple hundred yards. Stay on this road for 3.4 miles, ignoring many spurs which shoot to the left and right. Stay on road 051. The road was not too rough, and I imagine that it should be fine for most passenger cars. You will cross a cattle grate or two and at 3.4 miles you cross your second small bridge. In about 200 feet there will be a dirt road which heads back and to the left. Rocks block the entrance to this dirt road. Park here.
Hike:
You hike north on this dirt road/trail for about a mile or so and then meet up with the Tahoe Rim Trail. Take the TRT north towards Star Lake. After a series of long switchbacks you will reach the saddle at about 9,700 feet. The traverse to Trimmer Peak is to the left and the trail up to Freel’s Peak to the right. I traversed over to Trimmer’s Peak staying the right of the ridge for the majority of the time. There is no trail, but you need to work your way below the ridgeline. After tagging Trimmer Peak I headed back over to the sign for Freel’s and up to Freel’s Peak. From Freel’s, Job’s Sister is the obvious next stop. Despite looking very close by, the snow from last weekend’s storm and 400-500 foot drop down into the saddle made this take at least a half hour.
Backtracking from Job’s Sister down a few hundred yards to the saddle is a piece of cake, and then it gets a bit more interesting. You will hang a left towards Job’s Peak, and need to slide across the sandy slopes for about a quarter of a mile towards the lower saddle where you see a trail which leads up towards Job’s Peak. I highly recommend wearing good gaiters as the rocks will pour in to your shoes during this diagonal slide down Job’s Sister.
Once done with the sandy slide down Job’s Sister, you will want to stay close to the ridge and pick up the trail, which follows the ridge and curves left towards the summit of Job’s Peak. I went in early November and much of this trail towards Job’s Peak was covered in snow, which made for much slower going.
After gaining the summit of Job’s Peak head down the ridge for about a half mile or so until arriving at a series of large rock outcroppings. At these outcroppings a you will take a left, towards the south, on a trail which leads back down the valley towards Horse Meadows where you originally parked your car. Unless you are wanting to retrace your steps up Job’s Sister and Freel’s, turning left on this trail will save you a lot of time in completing the loop. The trail is surprisingly well marked as it stays to the left side of the valley and drops down quickly among the trees in the forest. After a couple of miles the trail hits the forest road 051. Follow this dirt road for about two more miles until arriving back at your car. The whole route was exactly 12 miles with 3700 feet of elevation gain. I started at 7 a.m. and finished at 12 a.m.

Freel and Jobs Sister
Intended to take the Armstrong Pass route but made a wrong turn and took the much steeper Trout Creek trail followed by the offtrail climb up to the TRT. Friday the 13th....my step-son David Frazier, Placerville neighbor Fred Rouse, and I reached the top of the #1 & #2 highest peaks in the Tahoe Basin. We started at 9:10am from the Horse Meadow Trail off Luther Pass (Highway 89) just beyond the highway summit. You take Forest Service Road - FS051 (left if coming from Meyers) and follow it up about 4 miles until you cross a bridge and a creek. As soon as you do this you will park your 4 Wheel vehicle on either side. Just to the left you will see the creek and a footbridge over this....just follow the trail up to the first junction of paths and go right on the Tahoe Rim Trail (TRT) towards Star Lake (the sign says 5 miles but you only go about 2 miles)...you will then reach a saddle where the path goes left to Star Lake or if heading to Freel Peak....you go to the right... there is a sign showing the way to Freel Peak (1 mile). We reached this point in 1 hour and 50 minutes from the start at Horse Meadow Trail. Another 1 hour and we were on top of Freel Peak 10881... the highest peak in Tahoe. Looking east at Jobs Sister 10823..... you will see a trail heading down and below across another saddle/trail leading up to Jobs Sister....this took us about another 35-40 minutes. So total time was just over 3.5 hours....we are fit experienced hikers so these times are accurate for most experienced Sierra Nevada summit junkies/hikers. We decided to not go back up to Freel Peak and follow the same path back.......instead we went down from Jobs Sister following the same path we took up.....to the saddle between the two peaks. We we could clearly see Horse Meadow below looking south. From here we choose to cut our own trail down and headed through the loose sand and decomposed gravel. This is challenging and fun for those who have dealt with hiking in this kind of terrain. Less than 2 hours later we found our road above where we had parked (FS051)and, about 1 mile above Horse Meadow. We followed the road down to our Jeep. Great hike... two great peaks with excellent views along the way and from the top. Easy to get to and straight forward if you follow this log. The only caution...make sure to have a 4 wheel vehicle with decent clearance on road FS051 as a rental car or passenger car would have a difficult time of it. ENJOY the hike!!

Freel, Job's Sister, Job's - out and back
Ran/hiked from Armstrong Pass (Willow Creek), up to Freel then to Job's Sister and on to Job's and back. That climb from "Job's Saddle" back up to the Job's Sister summit was tough. Gained ~1k ft. in about 1/2 mile. I was going on all fours sometimes to distribute my weight int the granite-sand and help prevent from sliding back.

Camped at Fallen Leaf Lake CG on 8/25/2012. Hiked with Andy Li. Our plan was to hike the 3 peaks in this area - (Freel, Jobs & Sister). We did not make to the Jobs since it was very windy and Andy felt tired. Next time!
