So. Much. Fun.
21 days on the trail. Incredible survey of Sierra lanscape. Fun side trip to Lake Ediza. Dramatic sunrise finish atop a snow-dusted Whitney. I shall return!
I walked John Muir Trail 4 times. I did it twice in 2009 (in July and September) once in 2011 and once in 2015. First time, in July 2009, I hiked it in 12 days, second time (September 2009) in 10 days and third time (2011) in 9 days. The longest distance I have walked in one day was about 38 miles (from Tuolomne Meadows to Reds Meadows). I never resupply along the trail. Never shipped packages. I did stop at Lake Edisson in my first journey and at Reds Meadows in the second one. The third time, I stopped at Muir Ranch where I got food for free :-). (For hikers who do not bring enough food and have no packages to collect, Muir Ranch and Lake Edisson are perfect spots to get leftover food for free. :-))
I always hiked it N-S (from Yosemite to Mount Whitney). In 2012 I started from S (Mount Whitney) but I did exit at Bishop Pass.
Great time on the hike alone with one resupply at John Muir Ranch. Started July 6 at Happy Isles and ended 8 am July at Whitney Portal with one rain day (making only 2 miles) and two off days when I went climbing. I would definitely recommend a resupply before Whitney Portal because carrying all that food up from Yosemite Valley, especially with heat and elevation gain, was a real killer. Initial pack weight with no water and camera equipment, including a tripod, was 42.5 pounds.

peak baggin all the way
Did the JMT (N>S) plus 10 extra peaks and hit 3 different hot springs along the way as well. From Happy Isles to Whitney Portal I estimate I did just over 300 miles. I missed about 40 miles of official trail Because of all the side trips, but had a transformative experience of a lifetime. Plan to make up those 40 miles next year (and hopefully add a bunch more).

Life-changing hike
Lost some friends, made new ones, fell in love on the trek. Hit the trail one week after submitting my dissertation and the beauty and sublime joy of the Sierras set some ideas in motion that culminated in changing my career to the one I'm starting now. Took 27 days to finish, including some glorious rest days, swimming and fishing, and really lazy giggly sexy mornings. Epic hiker barrels at MTR. Wouldn't change a thing.

I met Thaddeus on top
Bruce and I started out the John Muir somewhere around Keersarge lakes. We left Thaddeus behind to nurse Chilli who was suffering from some unknown malady. About three days later after a most awesome hike and a diet supplemented with trout, we summited. I will never forget seeing this red jacketed man, slowly, steadily picking his way through the rocks of the summit towards us...it was Thaddeus - he had climbed from the west by himself, left at something like 2 am. How cool was that!

JMT
Southbound in 3 weeks. Tons of snow. Made it an adventure. Should have planned a little more food. A bit hungry at times. The most amazing trip I've ever done. Highly recommend it to anyone.
14 days southbound through some of the prettiest parts of Sierra with Vendulka. Had a great time.

Fantastic Trip
7/13/06-8/2/06. Amazingly scenic and a great learning experience, can pack much lighter now and cannot wait to do it again sometime. Very heavy snow year and much of it full of mosquitos and swollen creeks.
