Juicy !

Juicy !

Found in a stand of trees near Green River, Dinosaur National Monument. I couldn't identify, but the consensus (see below) is that the bird is a Say's Phoebe. Thanks, everybody!

Suggest Say's Phoebe

Which is a flycatcher. I'm guessing the dark "markings" on the lower front are ruffled feathers.

Re: Suggest Say's Phoebe

Flycatcher family seems reasonable. But it doesn't really match this:

because of the crest.

This seems closer

Thanks for your suggestions!

Re: Suggest Say's Phoebe

Hi.
My thoughts,FWIW:

The crest, in the birds I've seen, isn't always apparent.

The underside wash is also frequently much less obvious than the field guide pictures, at least in my SE Oregon experience.

It seemed a better fit than any other western flycatcher.

This is about the limit of usefulness my own thoughts.

BUT. if it is allowable, I could post this page address to OBOL, a listserve that is habitat for an almost raptorial collection of advanced amateur and professional ornithological types.

Is that desirable? It's your page and I like the page. Your wish is my command.

Re: Suggest Say's Phoebe

Willdo this evening, has to be from home.

Brood patch is good.

I agree

My initial idea after stating it was a flycatcher was that it was a Say's Phoebe. The dark patch across the belly might be a worn brood patch indicating this as a female who has recently been on eggs, but I'm not sure on that. It is however worn there not ruffled feathers.

Posted address to OBOL as requested

Will relay comments over the next couple of days.
One could monitor directly most easily at:

BTW most states have similar listservers, many of which are indexed on birdingonthe.net

Re: Posted address to OBOL as requested

Four replies from OBOL, Say's Phoebe is consensus. Secondary suggestion female Vermillon Flycatcher, with caveat that it would be outside of normal range.

Observers responding would be familiar with Say's, a common E Oregon bird.

There is apparently no online checklist for Dinosaur.

BTW, the female Vermillon should have had faint streaks, which the one in the photo doesn't have.

I think this is as close as we're going to get.
