After not climbing ice for a year, I was antsy to just jump on and go....that I did. WI2/3 felt good except for the calf-burn. Great conditions, great fun with the girls. :)
Learned to lead here, been back since and everytime we are the only party there. Great place to get started on ice, although the routes are long.
Went with Joel Ward to Roadside Ice. He set a top rope and then I tried my hand. Did pretty well and had a blast for my first time ever on ice.
Ice went through some serious degradation several days before we arrived. Roadside ice was tracked out so we humped it up to Horseshoe falls in unbroken trail to find bad "ice" and a large curtain that had fallen off the route, lots of running water. We solo'd around for a bit placing screws and practicing anchors till we heard what sounded like a large rumble and it started raining large chunks of ice. We left at this point.
Climbed with Justin. Led the right side of Horsetail Falls on a pair of 60m half ropes in one pitch. Ice was sketch, hollow in places with water running underneath. Great views from the bolt anchors, nice day.
Then went to the roadside and led one of the right-center flows. Ice was thinner than it was in January (fancy that :) and grounded out a couple of screws. Higher up some more hollow ice with water running underneath. Mixed finish.
Fun, but I think I should stick to Jan/Feb for June Lake ice :)
Also climbed at the roadside ice several times over the years.
On Roadside Ice. Conditions there were even better than atop at Horsetail!
Climbed the right flow of Horsetail with some water running under it on my first roped water ice climb. After that we went down to the FAT roadside ice and climbed that, and the next day went to Lee Vining, all in all a successful outing!
Climbed with a gaggle-of-fools, (aka my friends) and had a blast. Always better when you share what you love with people who you love.
Did my first set of ice leads here. Very good ice (a bit shot out from overuse). My eyeballs are set on Horsetail and beyond!! Love dah ice!!
Climbed with SP and FB friends at Roadside on the weekend with perfect balmy weather. Newbs got their first leads; I'm so proud of B-Nick and Mr Dreamy. :) Was great to get back on ice after 2 yours.
Went up to June Lake with Rob. Roadside ice was in good shape.
Climbed on the left and right sides of Horsetail, the middle was totally melted out. Even on the right and left you could hear and often see the water running under the ice.
climbed alot here due to high avy in lee vining.
