Beautiful Climb  Sucess!

This was a nice fun hike. The scramble at the top isn't too bad. We took the south ridge up, but then took one of the east gullies on the way home for a nice loop. Beautiful views from the top.

Denny Creek Approach  Sucess!

I was stunned by the beauty of Chair Peak reflecting in Melakwa Lake. To my surprise, it seems the haystack scramble on Mount Si is more challenging than the standard route of Kaleetan. The mountaineers have left a summit register for people to sign up there. My feet hurt.

Traverse from Roosevelt

Hiked to base of Mt. Roosevelt prior night, camped, climbed Roosevelt by 9am. We decided that the day wasn't nearly over, and traversed across to Kaleetan over what I would consider mostly high 4th class terrain. Made a poor route choice for the final hundred feet or so to the summit, ended up on low 5th class rock without protection and a fair amount of exposure.

Spent the night at Lake Melakwa the night before. Had thunder storms and rain during the night but perfect weather for the climb. Some VERY large thunder heads could be seen east of Mt Rainier to the south. Some strange weather during those days.

Route Climbed: Main Trail Date Climbed: June 2005

Unfortunately my friend Alex and I chose a bad day for this climb. It rained the whole way up and we entered a cloud while scrambling to the ridge. It was a near white out when we gained the ridge and snow was beginning to stick on the rocks. We decided to get out of there and luckily made it off the steep part before the worst of the weather. I have to go back some time when it's sunny to climb this one.

No idea what the views are like on this one... 20 m from the top we climbed right up into a cloud. Seemed to be a nice airy summit, however. Easy approach, fun scramble at the end but a lot of loose stuff in the last gulley up to the summit

Route Climbed: South Route Date Climbed: August 15, 2004  Sucess!

Started at 10:52 am after a later-than-I-wanted start out of Portland. The first 3/4 of this hike are so similar to Mt. Forgotten that it is eerie. Forested hike up the east side of a valley with some clearings to some falls. Then switch to the west side and up and over a pass to a lake (tarn in Forgotten's case). Then steep up and down to get to the summit pinnacle. You might as well substitute route descriptions. ;- )

Made the lakes in 2 hours (4.5 miles according to 2 books) and it was about 2200 feet up. Took a half hour rest then headed towards the toilet to find the climber's trail up onto the ridge. Very steep and scrambly. Hot day and very sunny so I stayed in the shade as much as I could. That 300 feet you lose when you have to go down on the low west side of the ridge is a heartbreaker. Fun 3rd class scramble to the summit though. Car to summit in 4 hours 17 minutes. Nice break up top (views were somewhat hazy though) then descended down a 3rd (maybe one short 4th) class loose gully from the notch in the ridge at the base of the final summit climb. Hiked out to the lakes via talus fields in the valley floors. Back to car in about 3 hours 30 minutes. Wish I would have picked some of the blueberries I saw (another similarity to Mt. Forgotten).

Great views, easy scramble. We spent the night just past the second lake in the trees, and zipped up and out the next morning. Only passed 174 people on the way out from the lakes to the parking lot...
