Route Climbed: Helon Taylor / Knife Edge Date Climbed: September 5, 2005  Sucess!

Duane Gilliland and I climbed Katahdin as part of our 7-state highpointing trip over Labor Day weekend. We had perfect weather, and it being a national holiday, there were many folks on the mountain. We were impressed, however, at how many of them were completely unprepared for trouble. This is a real mountain with many hazards, and many people were wearing very little and carried nothing. The ranger at the TH did no screening or qualifying of the so-called "hikers". The "ranger" on the summit had only been up the peak once before, and he knew nothing about the various routes. We encountered some completely inexperienced folks who were headed down via the knife-edge, which would be OK except that there's some rather interesting 3rd class rock that would be more difficult to descend than it was to ascend. Even the easiest summit route (Saddle Trail) has a rather steep, loose couloir near the top, and the hikers we saw on that pitch seemed to struggle greatly on the descent. When we drove out of the parking area at about 4:30PM, most of the cars were still there, and we realized why there had been a steady stream of cars leaving the area well after dark the evening before. The Baxter State Park rangers are very concerned about avoiding rescue situations. They should start by qualifying people based on experience, gear, and other preparedness criteria, IMO, like the Adirondack Mountain Club rangers did at Mt. Marcy. Am I over-reacting?

Route Climbed: All of them! :-)  Sucess!

Climbed it about 20 times in my teenage years. I love the Cathedral Trail and the Hamlin Ridge Trail, making a loop out of either and the Helon Taylor Trail. Abol is good for a fast ascent (2 hrs. from campground to peak in my speedy days!).

Route Climbed: Abol Trail Date Climbed: June 9 2005  Sucess!

VERY hot with tons of blackflies. Views from the top were excellent and I can't wait to go back next summer!

Nice and hard alpine climb !

Highly classic and recommended

Route Climbed: Saddle Trail Date Climbed: August 8, 2003  Sucess!

Awesome climb, though a bit foggy and wet. This was my third attempt (rained out previous 2). My wife and I made it up together though neither of us were in good physical shape at the time. Something about that mountain will keep us coming back - Knife's Edge in 2005!

Route Climbed: Catheral Ridge Date Climbed: Aug 1991  Sucess!

A tough little climb. Man, was this park over-regulated!

The rangers were so officious it just made you want

to break a rule. Otherwise I did get one of my favorite

summit shots(the AT termination) here.

Route Climbed: Abol Trail Date Climbed: September 1977  Sucess!

Less than 100 feet of visibility until I reached the summit. Suddenly the clouds lifted and you could see for 20 miles. Thirty minutes later, the cloud window closed as if the mountain had given it to me as a reward.

Route Climbed: Hunt Trail Date Climbed: June 10, 2004  Sucess!

By far my favorite mountain to climb. Being out of shape, it was quite a challenge and the exposed sections made be a bit nervous on the way up. All in all, the climb was incredible...

Route Climbed: Knife Edge Date Climbed: Sept 25, 2003  Sucess!

Windy day with clouds stuck on Katahdin's summit all day. The Knife Edge was a fun walk/scramble and not as windy as the Helon Taylor route I took to Pamola. I continued over to Hamlin's summit to make a long loop and for the views of Katahdin. An early start and the wind advisory meant I only saw 3 other groups out above treeline.

Route Climbed: Hunt/AT Date Climbed: August 26, 1998  Sucess!

I've climbed Katahdin three times, but the most memorable was this day when I completed my AT Thruhike. I found I appreciated the mountain a lot more when I had 5 months to ponder my arrival and for the last week could see it growing larger as I drew a little closer each day.

Route Climbed: Knife Ridge, Saddle Trail Date Climbed: August, 1990  Sucess!

I've hiked/climbed Katahdin 2 times, both on visits to my Grandfather's house in Northern Maine. I was very young the first time, so my only memory is very strong winds - my father, uncle, and brother joked about tying a rope around my waist and using me as a kite. The second time, I went with my dad and uncle (again), and the wind wasn't as strong. Katahdin is a great highpoint, and a beautiful spot in Maine (one of many).

Route Climbed: Helon Taylor, Knife Edge, Saddle, Hamlin Ridge, Roaring Brook Date Climbed: July 4th 2004  Sucess!

Climbing Katahdin was the best 4th of July I've ever had. It was the first big mountain I've climbed and inspired me to start hiking more often. The weather was absolutely perfect, and it wasn't too crowded. The Knife Edge is amazing. I plan on going back every year. Katahdin makes me proud to be a Mainer.

Route Climbed: Helon Taylor to Knife Edge Date Climbed: august 10, 2000  Sucess!

Started the trip at 6:00AM with just about perfect weather the whole climb. Not many climbers on Helon Taylor, but when we left Pamola Peak to the Knife Edge, we encountered swarms of people all the way to Baxter. On the whole it made for a great but crowded day on the mountain.

Route Climbed: Dudley to Knife Edge to Summit to Hamlin Date Climbed: Aug. 20, 2004  Sucess!

Pat, Scott and I managed to hit a perfect day during a rainy spell. High winds on Dudley, beautiful views all the way. The climb didn't take long so we extended the trip by going to the less traveled Hamlin Peak. Took a cold, soapless bath in the Chimney Pond Outlet. A moose visited out campsite the next morning at Chimney Pond. A great climb all around, but a little busy at the summit.

Route Climbed: Cathedral Date Climbed: July 16, 2004  Sucess!

Great hike and views even though it was limited with the fog. Ranger Snow at Roaring Brook was a very friendly guy that had a wealth of information. Brian, I think it is 30 minutes that you have to wait before swimming and not 15.
