Kea

Kea

Another familiar sight on the Kepler Track is New Zealand's mountain parrot, the Kea. Under their dull green coat they sport a beautiful array of rainbow colored feathers. They are notoriously curious for anything that has to do with humans. And it's a destructive curiousity: they'll tear anything apart they can get their claws on. Don't leave your shoes outside the hut... As soon as they (there were 2) spotted us high on the ridge they came sailing up from the rainforest far below.

Re: pretty cool!

Thanks for the comment! Ah well it's not that it let me get so close, it came so close itself. We were just sitting there enjoying the view. As I said in the caption, they are damn curious bastards :-)

Cheers,

Rick

Normally

I don't vote on the animal or plant shots, but this one's just too damn cool to ignore. Great picture!

Re: Normally

Thanks for stopping by, I'm sure the Kea would appreciate your vote. They are very cool birds, but be sure to watch your gear.

Cheers,

Rick

Good shot

the cheeky bird. Hey, if you can, check out one of placing award winning photo shot in the New Zealand Alpine Clubs, Climber magazine, last issue. A serendipitous shot on Avalanche Peak catching a Kea rising with wings spread....the colours are superb.

Re: Good shot

Ha yes, I also almost caught one with his wings spread out, if it wasn't for the bloody autofocus that took forever!! Nearly threw my camera into the abyss in frustration. I'll see if I can find the kea shot you mentioned.

Cheers,

Rick
