Keeper of the Kigluaiks

Keeper of the Kigluaiks

"We drank the sun; Shared the wind; Being part of one inceased the wonder; The moment passed, still unreal .. Yet frozen in a timeless state of feeling ..." In Alaska's back-country north of Nome, many timeless rivers originate in the Kigluaik Mountains, seen here from the north at Pilgrim Hot Springs. Glaciers filled the north-facing cirques as early as 4,000 years ago, and a few glacial remnants remain at the head of the Crater and Grand Central River drainages. Storm tracks that move northward onto the Seward Peninsula from the North Pacific area bring up to about 2.5 meters of snow annually to these mountains. Recent reports on climatic change suggest that the glacial remnants in these mountains will completely disappear within the next 25 years. July 22, 2012

Excellent...

photo Larry. There's nothing like beautiful flowers and green fields to frame a mountain scenery.

Re: Excellent...

Thanks, Marc ... I'm going to let the "younger bucks" climb on Denali.

I'd rather be closer to the fragrant flowers
and wild Alaskan salmon, at any rate ..

Man, those blueberries sure hit the spot ...!

Pilgrim Hot Springs

... such an idyllic spot. Did you take this before or after easing yourself into the tub?

Re: Pilgrim Hot Springs

Okay ... I'll give ya the skinny.

My wife found it first, then she had to
backtrack because I had the wine and cheese in my backpack.

The water temperature near the springs is rated between 145-degrees to 160-degrees F,
but the water temp @ the tub was at least
122-degrees - so it's probably risen, (in recent years), due to possible displacement along the Kigluaik Fault.

Not my fault ... anyway, some drilling is
going on out there to (possibly?) supply
Mary's Igloo and the Nome area with geothermal resources in the not-too-distant future.

Also, the natural rate of flow appears to be
at least 60-gallons per minute.

NO shortage of hot water and/or skeeters
out there whatsoever ..

Re: Pilgrim Hot Springs

Yeah, but I'm surprised those skeeters were still hungry, after the meal they made off of me (including off some parts that I believe, until then, were still virgin real estate as far as skeeters were concerned).

Re: Pilgrim Hot Springs

My wife was "indoctrinated" really good to the State Bird of Alaska.

We were looking for the grave-site where a few of the orphans were buried during the flu-outbreak of the early 1900s.

Did you notice how the willows are much "taller" here due to the fact that the hot
springs have melted all 300-feet of the
permafrost layer ? More growing room ..

Wish we had that much growing room in AZ!

Re: Bravissimo...

Gracie, Antonio!

I need to return to Nome for a stiff shot of Vodka, while looking across the straits at
mainland Russia.

Hey ... I could probably accomplish that
(right here) in Arizona !!!

Re: Beautiful Larry!

When I get this gig finished, (full-time job),
I plan to travel to lots of these places.

But first, you gotta have a plan ..

Thanks, Kathy!
