Excuse mefor saying so, but a kestrel is a different bird from the sparrow hawk, it is a falcon, not a hawk. And sparrow hawks don't hover, while kestrels do that all the time. Judging from the colours (although they are in shadow), and from the wing tips, I would say this is a kestrel. Lovely photo!

Re: Excuse meI appreciate your comment, I agree with you that a Kestrel is a falcon not a hawk, however they are commonly refered to as sparrow hawks in North America. I am not sure about other parts of the world. I would be interested in additional comments on this subject.

Re: Excuse mePerhaps you don't have the real sparrow hawk (Accipiter nisus) in North America, and therefore call the kestrel (Falco tinnunculus) that? In Denmark we have both, and they are really rather different.

Re: Excuse meA Kestrel is a falcon--Falco sparverius. Sparrow Hawk is just the common name, probably because they eat small birds, rodents and insects. The European Sparrow Hawk(Accipiter nicus) sometimes shows up on the N. American east coast as an accidental.
