King of the Mountain

This particular Golden Mantled Ground Squirrel is more than likely the king of his domain, the summit of Avalanche Peak. Of the dozen or so squirrels I saw on the summit, his neck was the deepest in color - almost blood-red. That very deep color, generally present only on the most dominant males, has given this squirrel the knickname, copperhead. © Mike Hoyt, 9jul07.
