I got lucky on this one. I was photographing a nearby mountain, and I noticed this little "kiss of light" on Basin mountain. Ten minutes later, there was no sun on it at all.

I really didn't invent the name "kissed by the sun" I borrowed it from a well known mountaineer and photographer.

Re: LovelyThank you Tarol. Having lived in Bishop for a long time, you know very well where this mountain is. I was taking photos of Mount Tom and saw this light effect on Basin. Very lucky me.

ThanksFramed on my wall at home is a photo I took of this mountain back in December 1997, the day after I proposed to my wife. Maybe the stormy setting in the picture should have been a warning to me! Regardless, it's one of my favorite mountain shots even though it's a roadside view.
Anyway, I never knew the name of this peak before. Thanks, Marc, for the ID and the nice shot. Where's the view from, by the way?

Re: ThanksWow, what a life story, or love story, behind your photo! Only if Basin Mountain knew of your story. I'll be sure to tell it the role it has played in your life on my next visit to the Eastern Sierras.
There are a whole bunch of volcanic mounds in The Buttermilks area of the Eastern Sierras. I don't think they all have names.
My wife and I hiked up at least two of these hills the day before looking for the best view of the mountain. We came back before sunrise and hiked up the one we had decided on, and I set up my camera and waited. I think I took about 100 shots of Basin and the surounding mountains. This is one of the most intriguing ones.

Such a nice shot!Basin is a beautiful mtn. and looks heavenly with all the magical elements you could ask for in an eastern Sierra photo. Good job Marc!
