From Wankhaus-Höher Fricken-Krottenkopf-Farchant  Sucess!

I walked the ridge from Höher Fricken - went past the Bischof - to the Weilheimer Hut (2h). Very nice ward. Had a coffee there and then went up the Krottenkopf. Cloudy with light rain. Saw no other hikers the whole day. It started pouring rain as I started the hike back down to Farchant (2,5 h).

From Garmisch to Krottenkopf via Esterbergalm  Sucess!

One of my favorite day trips in the Bavarian Fore Alps. I like to approach from Garmisch because stopping at the Esterberg Alm is a treat, great food and it is nice to get a cold coffee after a long day. Hiking from St. Anton Pfarrkirche in Partenkirchen you follow the road to the Esterberg Alm. This part is straightforward. From there the trail across the higher alms can be confusing. Stay low on the mountain until you can see the trail continuing up above a long chute. The trail from the saddle below the Bischof and the Krottenkopf is very fun. Cross the snow field and begin ascending the flank of the Krottenkopf until you get to the somewhat steep headwall beneath the summer supply lift. Ascend to the Col where the Hut is located. I climbed this mountain three times in Jan/Feb and used the lee of the hut to stash my pack and snowshoes for my ascent. Crampons are not necessary but in the strong winds they were appreciated, as were an ice axe. The descent is the same route but take care in avalanche conditions above three when descending the headwall beneath the cable. I have seen several small slabs set off here. A long day trip but well worth it. There are also many good bivy spots along the trail between Esterberg Alm and the Krottenkopf. Also, a hike out to Esterberg Alm and then up the Wank makes for a nice day and gives a good place to stay the night.

Route Climbed: Eschenlohe - Simetsberg - Krottenkopf - Wank - Garmisch Date Climbed: 3rd-5th February 2004  Sucess!

Solo winter traverse of the Estergebirge with snow-shoes:

After I started at Eschenlohe train station (640m) around noon I reached the summit of Simetsberg (1836m) before sunset. Having spent the night on its shoulder, I descended down the next morning to Wildsee (1390m) to refill my water supplies after hacking through the surface with my ice axe. Then I crossed the Michelfeld and ascended Krottenkopf (2033m). I spend the next night beside the Weilheimer hut on the col between Oberer Rißkopf and Krottenkopf. In the morning I descended down to Esterbergalm (1290m) and then up to Wank (1779m). There is the only hut which is open during winter in the whole Estergebirge. After a great meal in the bright sun, I finished a successfull winter tour by descending down to Garmisch train station (708m).

I started in Eschenlohe and reached Krottenkopf after Hohe Kisten and Oberer Rißkopf. Nice tour for one day, and the hut is very near to get a Weißbier !

Route Climbed: Oberauer Trail - descent to Eschenlohe Date Climbed: 16 May 1998  Sucess!

From Oberau to Krottenkopf and further on to the Hohe Kisten, descent to Eschenlohe - that's a niche long, spring hike on the Bavarian Alps. More than 1500 m altitude gain in a day is a good start to get in shape for the summer season.

Route Climbed: winter ascent from Klais Date Climbed: 16 Feb 2002  Sucess!

After some very mild days not much snow until 1400 m. Beautiful, but very long trip from Klais to Krüner Alm and over the Michelfeld to Weilheimer Hut and summit. Nobody else on our route, another group came from the other side. Descent to Garmisch via Esterbergalm. See winter picture in Overview section from this trip.
