Then Koip and Parker. Recommend the loop rather than the snoozefest of Koip and Parker.
From Dana Mwds via traverse from Koip. More fun than Koip for sure with splendid views west.
Long and exhausting day hike from the Mono Pass trailhead on Tioga Road. Kuna Glacier daunting with a blue tarn below at this time of year. Saw the plane wreckage on the way and stopped to pay our respects to the B-24 crew. No register but a very cool summit with a nice view of the Ritter Range.
Started at Mono Pass Trail head. Saw the switchbacks on the way up to Koip pass and almost turned around. It was a perfect weather day and we could see forever. Checked out the plane crash on the way over to Kuna (left me feeling very sad... Young men lost their lives. They must have been so scared and they almost made it over...). Kuna is very cool with the rocks pointing up. Long walk back and drive to Mammoth.
Koip, Kuna and Parker, via standard approach from Tioga road. A good trail covers most of this distance, the off trail stuff is class 2.
Day hike from Tioga Road.
Mono Pass to Parker, Koip, and Kuna
Pics and commentary are here.
Pretty cool spikey summit, and plane crash remains--nice!
ended up climbing it twice as I discovered I had dropped my GPS after I returned to Koip. Did find the GPS near the wreckage on the way back
With MD from Dana Meadows. Tagged the summit. Then explored the wreckage. Then traversed to Koip. 12hr ctc.
Easy walk from the trail to the summit of Koip, then a bit more use of hands needed to reach the top of Kuna. Ten hours round trip with a stop at the crash site.
Day 3 of the Sierra Challenge, part of a large loop around Alger Lake area, coming from Blacktop Peak to the south. Trip Report
My first day of Sierra Challenge (day 3)-part of a 5 peak traverse. Standard no thrills or frills kind of peak, but cool little area. Traverse from Blacktop via Koip Crest which was the highlight of the day with Bob Burd and the gang.
Sierra Challenge day 3. Fun ridge traverse.
A two day trip, pitched camp just over Parker Pass and summitted Koip and Kuna on day one, a fun scramble over from Koip, not much snow to contend with- no axe, or crampons involved, but lots of snow in Lyell Canyon.
From Helen Lake we climbed the class 3/4 wall to the west, reached the N/S ridge, and followed it to the summit of Kuna.
Part of a 4-peak loop.
There is a make-shift register up there but the summit could use an amo can.
