lac de la lune

I've always wanted to go to the Lac de la Lune! in 2011 i finally visited Rwenzori , but by the new Kilembe trails. Fantastic. I know where Lac de la Lune is; did you have any trouble convincing the guides to go up that route? Did you then go out via Emin and Gessi?

Re: lac de la lune

Hi Doug:

I did not have trouble getting the guides to go up the route to the lake. We went from the Bigo Hut up the valley and camped near Skull Cave (which as of 2004 still had the namesake skull in it). From there it was about a 90 minute effort through thick forest to the pass and the view of the lake. The guides were reluctant to go up Emin and Gessi, though. On one day we climbed the lower summit of Emin (Kraepelin Peak). They did not want to go to Umberto Peak, but offered to just as thunderstorms approached. The next day, the intention was to climb Mt. Gessi, and we went most of the way up it but with thick fog the guides were so reluctant to go up that eventually, having had a memorable trip, we turned around although it would not have been difficult to continue on to the summit... The Duke ofAbruzzi climbed Mt. Emin from Mt. Speke. I think that if I ever get back that way (which I hope that I do!) I would try to go from Emin to Speke.

Re: lac de la lune

well, I got lost and never saw your reply! Very interesting...I still plan to go back to Rwenzori.I always thought my next trip would be the Central Circuit, but now I'm seeing there's a newer northern Bukurungu route! That looks attractive and a little la de la Lune detour wouldn't be to far off...
