with Penitente
Three hours to the top from the parking lot. The monorail on the trail was still pretty solid so there was very little postholing, despite regular snow starting 600 meters to the right of the stock gate on the way up. Went over to Penitente next. Two other people hiked Deception that day but I was the only one further out on the ridge.

Thunderstorms in the area
Pleasant hike over a total of 4 summits, but only Lake Peak had any real views or prominence. Thunderstorms were in the area, but I was down before they became a problem.

Ravens Ridge Route Up, Ski Slopes Down
Thursday hike up Raven's Ridge. Fun scramble to the top. Cold, cloudy, and windy for most of the hike. Cleared up and the sun came out when I made the summit. Fall colors were nice, but somewhat muted this year. Hiked down the ski slopes to my car. Nice hike!
Not sure why but my old summit entry was erased...
Hiked this peak six or seven times over the last few years. My favorite route is to hike to Nambe Lake and ascend to the ridge from there. This route gives the best "bang for your buck" mountain hike within a short distance of ABQ.
Hiked up via the south ridge and then headed down the talus slopes to Nambe lake on the descent. Looped back via the Windsor trail.
07/14/13 - Slopes from Nambe Lake to the North-West ridge.
08/29/15 - Up from Nambe Lake. Returned via Penitente and the Windsor Trail.

Ravens Ridge
A very enjoyable hike/scramble. Mostly shaded on way up in the morning until you come out of the trees, which is nice considering Santa Fe area gets very hot this time of year.. apparently. Tons of bugs on top, but nice views. For the stat people (like me): my girlfriend and I took 2:10 up and 1:40 down. We did some stopping for pics, etc. Could easily be done quicker.

Great Lake
Started early and was greeted by forest fire smoke across the range. But wind picked up and cleared off smoke to west for a brilliant blue sky day. From Ski area.
Climbed from Ski Santa Fe parking lot up the ski area and across Lake Peak, traversed to Penitente Peak, then down to Spirit Lake.

Early Morning Summit
A return to Lake Peak after business in Pojuaque met with success in an early morning outing. Traveled the SF slopes again up to the ridge, made the summit in 2:15 and back to the car in 4 hours. Nice side trip and early am exercise! Weather was nice and views were incredible!
Left Abq at 5:45 am with Jay and David. We got lost on the wrong road in Santa Fe but found it eventually. Started at 8:20, summited at 9:50. We headed on over to Penitente before backtracking and heading down. Returned at 12:15. Great day and this time I didn't forget the camera!

Nice walk
A nice hike over Deception and then over to Penitente. Walked in some small hail on the way down.
Met Jmoeesq as I was leaving the TH. We talked about the possible snow conditions and discussed our chosen routes. As he mentions he went straight up while I took Raven's Ridge.
There was intermittent snow covering the trail up to the gate, but once on the ridge proper it was pretty much all snow. No issues as the snow was firm and crunchy. Crampons would have been nice in a few spots, but an extra toe kick made sure I had something to bite.
Once on Deception I took a few minutes to study the ridge to Lake as I've never been on it before. While studying it I noticed Jmoeesq on the final ridge to the summit. I put away one pole and pushed across.
I met up with Jmoeesq on top and hung for a while after he left before continuing on to Penitente.
About 3:30 to the summit.
You beat me to it, again. :-)
It was nice talking with you on the summit.

Bomber Weather
Decided to make an attempt after a business trip to Pojuaque. Brought snowshoes and crampons b/c I live on East Coast and had no clue about conditions. Ended up carrying them but never using. Was good exercise with extra weight anyway and I felt better being prepared. Weather cooperated and was totally bomber. Barely a breeze on top. Not a cloud in sight. Took route up ski slopes b/c I was short on time. Made summit in 2:40, spent :35 on top and was down in 3:45 total time. Was an awesome climb and views were unbelievable! Ridge to summit was interesting--took some thought and concentration. I dropped down right a little in places to avoid some unacceptable exposure. Overall was wonderful time. Really glad I took the time to do it.
