It was very cold and windy, 52 at the TH yet dozens of parties were on this peak on this Saturday in July, some in shorts. The trail still has several well worn snow crossings, no gear required. The top 750 feet was engulfed in clouds, with only infrequent glimpses through small breaks. Made the side trip to the Wilderness HP before heading down. Thankfully we were mostly protected from the strong wind while circling the rim over to the HP. Visited Brokeoff later in the afternoon, which had no clouds and much lighter winds. RT for Lassen was around 3 hrs, with 45 minutes of that dedicated to the side trip to the Wilderness HP. Full TR is HERE
A very enjoyable hike, and did not encounter anyone until the descent. The first person I encountered was from Arlington. Small world!

Climb/Ski
Always good when you can ski in June! Kickstepped in approach shoes on lower half and waltzed up cinder and scrambled to summit while everyone else in boots schlepped. Skied SE face, short but good.

Shasta warm up. Easy!
Spent a few hours in the morning hiking Brokeoff, hiked Bumpass Hell with my family midday, and then spent a little under a couple hours hiking the easy, revamped Lassen Peak trail. The park was incredibly busy for Labor Day weekend with full parking lots in most places and cars lining both sides of the road for nearly a mile in the Bumpass Hell area.
Many late afternoon hikers were on Lassen, which was a breeze with consistently easy and smooth switchbacks.
After being up there so many times in summer, I need to try a winter/spring snow climb there.

Climbing NE Face in May
Climbed the North-East face with a party of 3 in early May.
Parked in the devastated area. Started around 6am. Was teaching a friend how to self-arrest and so we ended up taking 8-10 hours to reach the summit and back. Should take <6 hours. The true summit is on the right. We ended up realizing that mid-way through our climb and tried traversing. Probably a better idea to traverse from the top if needed. The last part of the climb is steep. Going from the right is easier.

Southeast Ridge, Starting at Kohm Yah-mah-nee
Brought my buddy Donatas. His first mountaineering trip. hiked up the road from the visitor center, carrying snowshoes in hand due to hard pack snow. snowshoed the rest of the way to the summer trailhead. stashed snowshoes and extra stuff in the trees. crampons and axes up the southeast ridge. Perfect weather and conditions. Crystal clear and 360 degree views. long glissades back down and then a long trudge back to the car at the visitor center. 16 miles round trip.

Fairly crowded since only a few weekends were open this season.
Gaper sightings were unreal!
