Nice morning hike!  Sucess!

Not too steep, great morning hike with a view. Last 150' to the top was slushy and the rock and gravel were loose.

June 14, 2018  Sucess!

1 hour 15 mins up, then I circumnavigated both craters, saw a weasel, and walked/glissaded down. 3.5 hours car to car.

First Cascade

This was my first Cascade and along with Mt. Shasta my favorite. I’ve done dozens of Winter climbs of this peak from the SW entrance station. This is the only mountain on which I broke a bone (in Feb 2014) but I could not love it more. An easy and fairly safe winter climb without the crowds.

First Volcano (as a boy)  Sucess!

My dad drove us to Lassen National Park when I was about 13. In addition to enjoying the volcanic activity at Bumpass Hell we hiked up the trail to the summit of Mt. Lassen. At that age it seemed to take forever, but I was awestruck by the park.

About 14 years later (during the summer of 1972) I hiked up the trail again with my wife, Deborah Kimbrell.

Southeast Face Direct  Sucess!

Went straight up from the road where it turns towards Reading Peak, and went up the Southeast face to the right of the trail. Easy, short climb that was lots of fun with a little 40 degrees towards the top.

Good Hike  Sucess!

Very nice hike to the top. Was way more crowded than I expected it to be in the early AM. Topped off my view from the top by proposing to my girlfriend at the summit! Great day!

Lassen Peak Trail  Sucess!

Perfect early a.m. weather for a quick summer hike. Fun to explore the top and see the geological formations with my son.

New Trail

Lovely hike, but busy and several unprepared people. Hot day. Bring extra water for those who are unprepared.

Lassen Winter Summit  Sucess!

Cold mild day on Lassen, roads nearly closed for snow, and empty. Climbed quickly to a fogged in summit. Little ice and hoarfrost on trees. Other than that, a simple trail to summit. Would be a good ski descent.

Cold July day  Sucess!

It was very cold and windy, 52 at the TH yet dozens of parties were on this peak on this Saturday in July, some in shorts. The trail still has several well worn snow crossings, no gear required. The top 750 feet was engulfed in clouds, with only infrequent glimpses through small breaks. Made the side trip to the Wilderness HP before heading down. Thankfully we were mostly protected from the strong wind while circling the rim over to the HP. Visited Brokeoff later in the afternoon, which had no clouds and much lighter winds. RT for Lassen was around 3 hrs, with 45 minutes of that dedicated to the side trip to the Wilderness HP. Full TR is HERE

Sunrise Hike  Sucess!

A very enjoyable hike, and did not encounter anyone until the descent. The first person I encountered was from Arlington. Small world!

Climb/Ski  Sucess!

Always good when you can ski in June! Kickstepped in approach shoes on lower half and waltzed up cinder and scrambled to summit while everyone else in boots schlepped. Skied SE face, short but good.
