Route Climbed: Hikers Trail Date Climbed: July 26, 2002
The first one to the summit this day. One other guy headed up the summit pinacle as I was coming off it. Did John's class three variation for the summit. That part was fun. Had a picture taken by a family that had arrived on the small plateau. The air was so dirty that only the very top of Shasta was visible. What a disappointment. Passed hordes of people on their way up as I was headed down.
This is a great warm up climb for climbers travelling to Shasta from the south. A wonderful view of the Lassen volcanic park is available at the top. Can be windy but no significant hazards await those with proper footwear.
Route Climbed: South Face. Route Skied: Northeast Face Date Climbed: June 9, 2002
Very nice climb and ski descent. I got to see parts of this mountain I didn't know existed. The best part of the ascent was going through the left-hand chute of the South Face route. Fun ski descent as well and I hope to head up to ski this one many times! See my SP Trip Report for details.
Route Climbed: Lassen Peak Trail Date Climbed: See Below.....
Have done Lassen Peak three times, with all three trips via the standard Lassen Peak Trail. The first trip was in August 1999, the second trip was in September 1999, and the third trip was in June 2001. This hike/climb was really enjoyable every time I did it. The trail is not very strenuous, if you allow the time necessary to do it comfortably. Great views from the top of Lassen NP, the upper Sacramento Valley, and of Mt Shasta to the northwest!
Route Climbed: Lassen Peak Trail Date Climbed: June, 1983
This was the last mountain we did on a 2-week journey through the volcanoes of The Cascades. This was my first big climbing trip away from my home mountains of the Sierra. We weren't very successful on that trip, but boy! did we have a good time. In fact, this was the trip that got me hooked on traveling & climbing mountains!
Route Climbed: South Slope Date Climbed: May 11, 2001
This was an extremely fun acclimatization warmup for Mt. Shasta the following day. The road had just opened the day before and there were only a few cars in the parking lot all day. I had much fun scrambling about on the rocks and snowshoeing around the crater rim.
Route Climbed: South Side Date Climbed: June 25, 2000
By this time of year, the road was plowed and there was very little snow remaining on the trail. The snow had already started breaking up on the Northeast Face, however, there were still some decent runs on the South Face. This was my first time up this volcano and unfortunately I didn't bring my skis. On the way up I ran into a guy hiking up in flip-flop sandals, t-shirt, and shorts, with his snowboard and boots. I got to see him ride down the South Face using his sandals as "gloves" as well as a skier who was stuck out on the slope. Since this guy wasn't moving, a ranger had to go up to meet him - not sure what happened there. It was a gorgeous day and I highly recommend going when there's still snow.
