Later in 1980 little dome...

Later in 1980 little dome building had occurred in the new crater of Mt. St. Helens.

Boooom!

Sweet shot!

I would love to see a pic looking up or out of the crater from the Lava Dome (this would probably require a geologist to upload a photo as the crater is off-limits to normal folk).

Re: Boooom!

Yeah, I was really lucky to get this shot. A childhood friend who was a pilot in Alaska for many years was visiting in Vancouver at the same time I was (I was living in Juneau when it erupted). Four of us rented the plane, and he piloted it. Unfortunately I had negative film in my camera, and for some reason the camera refused to work at first, but it finally started working and I was able to take a few shots. Having climbed it pre-eruption, the view had a very strange impact on me emotionally. It was an unforgettable flight.

Re: Boooom!

I just discovered this pic (I thought I had seen all of yours) but your comment of the strange impact is right on. For some reason it feels like a let down to see this once absolutely gorgeous mountain gutted like this.

Great shot!

I really like the ones you see and think, "where the hell did they take THAT from?"

Of course, there's a much bigger dome/pile of debris in there now.....

Probably just dreaming

Maybe some day St. Helens will grow to be the highest mountain in the Cascade Range. As long as it's building I'm happy. A great shot. cowlitz
