Left Branch

Left Branch

Viewed from below the first of two significant rock islands in the couloir on the Gardner Headwall of Stockaid Peak. Here, between 10,500 and 10,600', the couloir "branches" due to the rock islands. Right continues up steep, relatively wide slopes. Left (shown) enters a narrower, even steeper section as it pushes to the top. You can also mix in some scrambling via the islands. From the first island, you can resume snow travel or cross to a second island, which itself gives two choices: cross to a third major rocky area, which leads all the way to the summit plateau, or finish up the snow, climbing a nearly vertical headwall 8-10' high at the very end. Expect moderate to tricky Class 3 on the rocks, even some short Class 4 spots. Beartooth Mountains, WY-- July 2008
