Light breaking through at the Tabernacle

A stop at river mile 74 allowed Aron and I to hike out of the canyon's inner gorge and up to the Tabernacle. Rising 4,830' above sea level, the Tabernacle is a church shape formation that has eroded from the 515 million year old layer of Muav Limestone. To reach the summit, we hiked for over an hour through fairly heavy rains, our Musical Backpack lightening the somber mood. As we neared the top, a break in the clouds allowed for an amazing scene to unfold. For the next twenty minuets we watched the canyon transform itself from a dark, rainy abyss to a beautifully lit, wide-angle Grand Canyon panorama. A rainbow spanned the river; dark, fleeting clouds passed, revealing snow at higher elevations; low-angle evening light bathed the canyon walls; the heavens parted and winged cherubs sang their praises.
