Lizard Head Peak

Lizard Head Peak

Lizard Head Peak, considered one of the hardest peaks to climb in Colorado. Unfortunately, or fortunately, we didn't climb it while there. We did a day hike up the Cross Mountain Trail and down the Lizard Head Trail. There were some incredible views of Lizard Head, the Wilson Group, and toward the Sneffels Range and east toward Vermilion Peak on these trails. Quite a unique peak! (July 1, 2009)

Not the Hardest...

This is the hardest peak above 12461 with 300+ft of rise. Twin Peaks at 12461 is harder (5.9) and Turret Ridge at 12260 (5.9) is harder. The Index at 13340, is higher in elevation and more difficult, but rises only 240 ft. There are other peaks in CO with 300+ ft of rise in the 5.10+ range. Lizard Head is a short pitch of 5.8.

Re: Not the Hardest...

Thanks for the info. I certainly don't know that much about Colorado since I have only been there three times. I will change it to "one of the hardest." Have you climbed Lizard Head?

Re: Not the Hardest...

Not yet - probably next year. It is definitely the one 13er everyone who wants to finish the list worries about. The main page here for Lizard Head seems to have the same comment (hardest to climb in CO) so I can see where people could be given that impression. Guess we have the Ormes Guide to blame for that (written before first ascents of some of the peaks I mentioned). Good shot BTW

Re: Not the Hardest...

Yeah, I have never even heard of the others, but as I said, I am no expert of Colorado. Thanks!
