Couldn't see a class 2 option
We were attempting to find a class 2ish route based on the information given on the Summit Post, but we could not find or see any class 2 options going up or down. The post made it seem like the route would be obvious, but even for experienced climbers it was not. I would suggest starting from Upper Born Lake, traversing to the left until reaching the ridge, go up to the ridge, then traverse the ridge until the summit. Class 3. Loose rocks and hard dirt made for some sketchy spots, but the views were worth it!

Great views, loose climb in the shoot
The route described is more loose class 3 than 2, but if you take the ridge up instead it's easier class 2 and more open. Great views at the top with a new register from 2019. Looked for the old one a bit but couldn't find it in time as we were had to leave when a storm rolled in!

SW face
Climbed the center gully on the southwest face. Looked like the most fun and was the most direct.
A group of pre-teen boys were hanging out at Lonesome Lake. We spotted each other and exchanged hellos. Then they soon decided they should climb the peak too! I got a kick out of that and I commend their adventurous spirit. They only had 900' vert to climb on easy terrain so I knew they'd be fine.
Descended the south ridge and completed the traverse to Mt. Frank. Possibly a first.

Climbed to the top with my brother on our way to Frank and Patterson. We climbed Blackmon peak Earlier in the day and we're too wiped to summit anything else. Great view of castle peak from here. Look out for the summit register.

West ridge
Took off from the 4th of July TH, over Blackmon peak and across the creek to the base of the west ridge. Made the hike up to the ridge and traversed up to the top. Not much snow left on Lonesome Lake.
We had lofty aspirations of hiking up Frank and Patterson the same day, but the first two really took it out of us.

From Born Lakes
Went up through the trees from Born Lakes, then took the ridge to the summit. Gorgeous weather and views. Good footing all the way up.

really good views
lots of great views of the White Clouds and Lonesome Lake. The ridge scrambling was pretty fun. The scree coming off the ridge not so much

Lonesome Indeed
Left the Born lakes trail shortly after descending into Ants Basin. Cut off some trail mileage to the lakes, added a bit of up and down but it seemed pretty quick overall. Climbed the west ridge, which offered solid footing. Awesome views of the Boulder Chain of Lakes, Castle Peak, and the Northern White Cloud peaks from the summit. There was a bit of smoke in the air so I couldn't see the Sawtooths very well. Hit Blackman peak on the way back to the car. Didn't see anyone except at the trailhead.

Ridge Running
This interesting peak was the 2nd peak of the day, and the start of a great ridge traverse toward Patterson Peak. The weather was perfect and I was treated to the new sport of ridge jumping. There was a small shelter built at the summit that contained a summit log.

Route Climbed: South Ridge
I stayed at the Born Lakes with a couple of friends and summited Patterson the first night. In the morning we headed up Devil's Staircase and took the south ridge to the summit. The route was pretty fun, mostly class 2-3 boulder hopping. Fun peak, and a unique perspective on Idaho's highest lake.

Awesome Loop
Lonesome was the highlight of three-peak day in the White Clouds. Climbed the southwest face, then traversed the south ridge on the way back down. We tagged Blackman on the way in, then did Patterson on the way out. SawtoothSean and I got a bit of a late start and didn’t leave the trailhead until noon, but we were rewarded with ridgetop views of the sun setting behind the Sawtooths (very cool). Did the last few miles back to the car using headlamps. Here’s a trip-report and some photos.
