Upper Forsythe Glacier, 1977

This body of ice does not exist now, of course. Nothing does on this, the north side of the mountain.

Awesome!

You are on of the lucky few who knew that mountain before it was changed.

Re: Awesome!

Yes, I'm pretty proud of that, and thank you very much! I, too admire your accomplishments in the mountains and in your reporting here in Summitpost. I entreat you though to get back to Cave Ridge. I pushed way into Cascade Cave (not as much vertical as Newton) and think it could go further....Alas, I'm in Michigan now and these adventures are not frequent...Thanks my friend. Be safe.

Another gem

Love pics like this one. Special times. I climbed Rainier first in 1969 and then St. Helens in 1973 and I will never forget the day when the mountain "blew" up. I was living in Kennewick at the time and the sky blackened and blocked out the sun. So amazing.

Re: Another gem

It was a real landmark day in the consciousness of those in the PNW. But how much more for those of us more acquainted with the mountain? Thanks for your visit and comment.

Joel,

I lived near Corvallis when St. Helens erupted.
Even that far south, we had a thin coat of ash all over our property, cars, roads, etc.
I was only in 6th grade, but I will always remember that event.

Re: Joel,

I was biking home from a location 30 miles due north of the volcano. Though I was pedaling fast to cover the 90 miles I was never in any real danger as the bulk of the ash cloud went east and i was biking back north to Seattle. We got a light dusting in Seattle.
