Looking back down the east...

Looking back down the east ridge of Quandary. My climbing partner is visible at the left edge of the photo. We saw a total of 6 people and 2 dogs on the ascent. Dec 04.

nice pic

I encountered similar conditions on Quandary when I climbed it in October. I'm not surprised to hear that you encountered so many people on the mountain that day. It has very good access and its conditions make it stable all winter. On almost all occassions, winter will gain you solitude in the mountains - even in Colorado - but evidently some mountains are too "good" to be true!

Re: nice pic

Thanks. Most days I wouldn't have been surprised to see that many people or more, but the weather was cold enough to ward away most everybody, that and it was a weekday. The scary thing, however, is that the group of 4 we saw had little to no equipment with them. While they were well dressed, it seemed like they lacked the basic necessary survival gear for the conditions.

The other two provided some humor as well. Just after we summitted we passed a man climbing solo with 2 dogs and his snowboard. When we stopped to talked to him, we learned that one of the dogs wasn't his and had apparently just joined up for the summit. This seemed very strange, but we continued on down in the hopes to get out of the cold. As we neared treeline, a man was coming up (the owner of the dog). About the time we got to him, the boarder and the two dogs caught up with us and a reunion was to be had. Very strange occurrence.
