Looking north from the summit...

Looking north from the summit of Bird Mountain across the Indian Heaven Wilderness area. The two closest high points are northern satellite peaks of Bird Mountain (closest is Point 5568). The Bird Mountain trail passes between the two of them. The "flat-topped" peak in the distance is Sawtooth Mountain (which is also worth a visit). -7/16/05

Klenke adds: the peak center in the distance is Steamboat Mountain.

And at center in the distance...

...Steamboat Mountain. I car-camped on an overgrown logging road on the backside of that thing but didn't want to climb it in the morning in the rain.

Re: And at center in the distance...

Does Steamboat have any established trail or route? I remember looking at that one on a map before I went and did Sleeping Beauty and Sawtooth a few weeks ago but could not find any info on it so I gave up on it. Let me know if you want to go back and nab that one.

Re: And at center in the distance...

I was able to drive to here (c. 4,600 ft) where the road finally necked down to undrivable. I parked and camped, exhausted from trying to keep up with Nelsen on Skamania Pinnacle. The peak is only 800 ft higher. Not much of a climb considering the long drive, but a good thing to tag while passing through for other reasons--especially if that shorter approach and trail on the SE side is really there.

Re: And at center in the distance...

I think William Sullivan references Steamboat Mtn in 100 Hikes in the Portland area back in the appendix. I seem to remember seeing a sign for Steamboat when we were over climbing Sawtooth, tho' didn't have time to go check it out.

What's the Skamania Pinnacle? I've never heard of that one... Sounds interesting.

Re: And at center in the distance...

Aha -- Skamania Pinnacle = west ridge approach on Mt. Adams. Thanks!
