Looking up towards the summit...

Looking up towards the summit (not visible) from the ridgeline on the south side of Miners Canyon. The routes up from Miners Canyon include the slope in the foreground. It is HIGHLY recommended that a rocky ridgeline be taken instead of the Canyon or talus slopes, as the limestone/shales that make up the mountain at these elevations are some of the most unfriendly surfaces for the hiker anywhere in Nevada. From the east

Scotty, I was thinking of doing this from the east, (see map below) as the Topo makes it appear that there is an old road that reaches up on the east side that is much more direct than Miner's canyon.

When you were looking down that way, what is your assessment of doing Pilot from that direction? A lot of the snow that was present in early May looks like it is gone cause it was loaded pretty good then.

Nice series of pics.

Re: From the east

Well Dean, the problem that I see there is the shorter distance --- the first 1k looks nice, but after that it would be sustained, talussy, and steep. The Miners Canyon ridge would only be really annoying for the first 1.2k or so, and then after that would probably only have short sections of vegetation or steeper talus. Distance-wise, it's all so short that it doesn't matter --- speed over terrain is the issue here. I might try to descend some of the talus sections in the center chutes, but if the talus size got too large it would be worse....

Re: From the east

Are you sure talussy is a word?

Re: From the east

I debated on how to spell it, but then I said, "I'm making it up, I can spell it however I please, and Webster will have to deal with it."

Re: From the east

Whoops, I didn't make it up --- it shows up here, in the Overview section...
