Re: So how was Rainier?We only got to about 11,600ft. I was the only idiot on the mountain in leathers and my toes were having issues so I needed to turn back before I lost some of them. No one was summitting except one party did Ingraham Direct the day before but took 3 days to do the whole thing. The route was wandering and pro placement was slow. We gave up on the Gib Ledges as no one has done that one lately and the only party that tried turned back early due to 55 degree ice.
We decided to try Ingraham Direct and got into the icefall but not far. Dead-ended on a serac. I'll post some pics tonight. Even with the great weather it was cold up there. Thin slab over sugar snow over ice. I think only one party summitted the entire weekend and that again was by Ingraham Direct (well, their variation of it). They went up the right side near the Cleaver from what we could see.
I know that I am now buying a pair of plastics with my REI dividend though! Winter on Rainier is no place for leathers, man. What was I thinking?

Re: So how was Rainier?Bummer man. Nice go at it, sounds harsh! That big pile gave me all I wanted 2 years ago in May, I'm sure it is much colder and harder now.

I know what you mean about leather - I finally broke down and got a pair of plastic boots last Dec. and what a difference - no more cold toes for this old guy. Probably put them to good use again on Hood tonight. (gotta take advantage of this incredible weather)

Re: So how was Rainier?Nope we just noticed it on the drive out of the park. You can see it from the road as you pass the point where Eagle Peak is closest to the main road (just a bit west of Longmire Museum near Cougar Rock. There is a long stream that David thought might be a waterfall until we got closer and noticed it was frozen. Not sure what condition it is going to be with all the warm weather but figured you'd appreciate it.
