Lost Canyon in January  Sucess!

Lucky for us the weather was clear for a few days in the area without rain or snow in the forecast. Despite the clear sunny skies, it had snowed a few days before we started this hike and there was snow and ice along the trail.

We got off to a late start and started hiking at 1:00pm, the sun quickly setting forced us to kick it into high gear and we finished the entire hike in 4 hours.

There are a few sketchy parts of the hike that involve scrambling and steep drop offs, watch your step and be extra careful around the sections with snow and ice. If things looked that bad we would have either turned around or avoided those sections trying to find another route. Watch the weather forecast if you decide to do this in winter.

We brought our crampons, per the advise of the NPS, but they really wouldn't have helped us on this terrain. You will have to cross several frozen stream crossings and hike on top of some thick plants. Watch those cairns to help guide you. I had to remind my partner several times where the cairns went, it's easy to get off trail.

All in all, totally do-able in the winter with proper precautions. As far as scenery goes: it's a pretty hike, but not the fairest maiden in the land.

Lost Canyon  Sucess!

Camped at Lost Canyon after starting a 1 night backpack from the Elephant Hill Parking lot at the end of the gravel road. Went by Big Squaw Canyon and saw Druid Arch in the process.

overnight  Sucess!

Camped at LC2 - great campsite next to a huge boulder. Voracious mice kept trying to get into our food - I recommend carrying a rat sack! Loved the canyon scenery and appreciated the water present this time of year so we didn't have to pack it all in.

Get Lost  Sucess!

Did a series of trail loops (Lost Canyon to Squaw Canyon to Elephant Canyon) to get the most out of my last day in area. Lost canyon is has more water and brush than the other canyons, but is still a nice hike.

Lost  Sucess!

Lost Canyon is OK, but not quite as neat as some of the other canyons in the area. It's still worth visiting.

Lost Canyon  Sucess!

Only saw a few people at the end of the day in Squaw Canyon, otherwise had the whole place to myself. A little chilly in the morning but very pleasant later. The vegetation had not bloomed yet and that created its own beauty.
