Easy day at high elevation  Sucess!

just need to drive to the end of Mack's Canyon Road. Climbed w/ Rory in a half day. The famous chute was the only feature that might slow you down along the way. Great views for the effort involved.

Short but nice  Sucess!

Macks Canyon is really nice, and the approach is easy. The chute does indeed have a ton of loose rock and there is one uneasy spot on a ledge, but other than that it's a cool peak that looks impossible to get to from afar.

Again on 9/1/2018 with my friend Adam. This time, we took the higher "ledge" on the ascent, and the lower on the return. Less loose stuff on the higher, but there's a potentially uncomfortable outcropping that you have to squeeze around.

Short   Sucess!

It was about three miles round trip, so afterwards I went up North Sister, which was just across the road.

From the north, July 1, 2012  Sucess!

Summitted with Barry and Abby (the cocker spaniel). Worried about the ledge from the descriptions, but it has good rock to hold on to. The creek in the canyon is as low as I've ever seen this early in the year.

Macks Peak  Sucess!

Hiked from Macks Canyon. This is a direct route and fun peak to climb. Charleston and Mummy were already snowy from a recent storm.

From Macks canyon  Sucess!

climbed this one with Steven and Tyrel Stembridge, and Kiel Winger. Kiel's Dad, Robert stayed below just past the half-way up spot. Beautiful day for a hike. Snow made the ramp just before the summit ridge a little interesting but it all worked out.

Macks Peak Traverse   Sucess!

8 of us (lead by Branch Whitney) did Macks Peak Traverse (from South to North).
Many class 3-4 scramble with exposure.
My Trip Photo Album
This is one of the best traverse around the Las Vegas.

Macks Peak  Sucess!

I normally do Mack's Peak on July 4th. I found the northern route to North Mack's Peak in the early 2000's. We did the traverse around 2005. That has some good exposure.

Normal Route From Mack's Canyon  Sucess!

The Ramp was a bit tricky with lots of snow, but that makes the hike even better.

Branch Whitney's Route  Sucess!

Well I can know scratch Macks Peak off of my list of Spring Mountain Peaks.

My friend Bob and I tried to climb this one on July 25th but got turned back by a heavy rain. Not only did the rain turn us back but running across a fresh mountain lion kill sort of had us on edge.

Today was a great day for the hike. Not a cloud in the sky. The high in the valley was 99 degrees and there was a slight wind blowing.

Bob and I, along with his son Rob, hit the trail at about 2:30 in the afternoon. Several hours later we were on the summit. It only took us about an hour and a half to descend.

We used the directions in Branch Whitney's book Hiking Las Vegas.

We met at the turn off for Macks Canyon Road where we all rode in Bob's truck to the trailhead. Macks Canyon Road is a twisting, turning dirt road that runs for about 4 miles until it dead ends at the trailhead. Large boulders mark the end of the road.

Although this road is a little bumpy in spots most vehicles with a little bit of clearance shouldn't have any trouble navigating it.

The hike basically follows a steep wash up to a ridgeline. From the ridgeline you head right towards the base of the mountain then scramble up a steep, narrow chute with lots of loose rocks. This section of the hike was the only part you really had to be careful on as it is a bit exposed and the likely hood of sending rocks tumbling onto your fellow hikers is a very real possibility.

We signed the summit log and the geocache that was located at the top.

This was a fun hike that I'd enjoy doing again.

chute route and traverse  Sucess!

Date is sort of a guess. I went up the normal chute 5 weeks after pericutaneous heart surgery. I used the instructions from Branch Whitney's web site and had no trouble finding the way. The stump is still there; there is still an obvious herd path up high.

Second time on the chute (2005), I did a wall-climbing act to avoid being nailed by a boulder loosed from above. The north peak is nicer.

July-29-07 did a traverse from South Macks (normal Peak) to North Macks. A very interesting and somewhat spooky trip.

Watch out for falling rock on the last portion of the climb, it would be best to keep the hiking party small.

Did not find cairn, was never where I was supposed to be, got tired of looking for route to the summit, gave up and camped on a nearby ridge, but I did find a good route during the descent.

Route Climbed: via Mack's Canyon Date Climbed: 2 or 3 summers ago  Sucess!

The ledge and the little bit of class 3 stuff near the summit were the highlight. A very nice area. Mack's Peak is definitely one of the more obscure higher peaks of the Spring Mountains.
