With WMC group - Akiko, Michelle and Beth. We encountered significant snow from exceptional past winter. Nice views all around; but particularly spectacular views of North Timp and the ridgeline, from low down in GC Canyon

Awesome Day
Hiked up via Grove Creek and made our way up the steep ridge to the summit of Mahogany. Beautiful clear fresh air with some of the bluest sky I've seen; it contrasted heavily with the smog filled valley below. Great views of Timpanogas as well. The hike took longer than we thought but was well worth it!

Miko, Nala, and I started at the Grove Creek TH. 3.5 miles to the Timpanookee Road. Walked the road 2.5 miles and took the Northeast ridge to both Mahogany North and on to Mahogany. 17.0 miles RT gaining 4716.
05/02/15: Much shorter route this time. West Ridge.

Rain & Sleet--Still Fun
Hiked Mahogany solo today via the southeast ridge (starting about 25 feet past the bench).
There was a good deal of rain turning into snow as I bushwhacked up the ridge, but it was still a fun time. I opted to go down the north side, cross the Timp saddle, and up the other side to the Timpooneke road. I stayed on that road until I reached the turnoff for the Indian Springs campground, and then headed back down Grove Creek.
Three of us made this summit the day after Independence Day. The Wildflower display rivaled the performance from the fireworks the night before. The views of Timp and Alpine Ridge were spectacular! Everything was so green. Storms had passed the night before and made for a muddy and humid mess. Totally worth the views. We came from the Timpooneke Road trail head.
Second trip to the summit--this time without any rattlesnake encounters or bushwhacking across the Timp saddle.
The weather was beautiful--about 13 degrees above normal for this time of year--and we were pretty much the only ones on the mountain. Quite a bit of pain for a relatively "small" mountain, but always a good workout. And we didn't cause a landslide as we met back up with the trail--always a plus!

Lots of Bambies
I went straight up the southwest ridge. It was steep, but I think it made the going faster. I also saw a lot of bambies and their glowing eyes on the way back. The views of the other mountains are superb.

To the summit via the southeast ridge
A friend and I decided to take the southeast ridge up to the summit. As others have stated, it was a bit trickier to scramble up the loose rock than I anticipated. I also had a face-to-face with an angry rattlesnake as I was scrambling up.
Not wanting to create a landslide on our way back down the ridge, we decided to attempt to work our way over to the Timpanooke campground and have my wife shuttle us back to our car. I called her, and she started heading up toward American Fork Canyon. Unfortunately, we couldn't find an easy way down into the saddle that headed north, and ended up just having to bush whack our way back to the Grove Creek trail. Because of spotty cell service in the saddle, I couldn't alert my wife about the change of plans. Needless to say, I definitely mismanaged the whole situation. But we had a good time, and covered a lot of ground. Having wandered quite a bit around that mountain, I'd have to say that there really isn't a great approach to the summit that doesn't include some major bush whacking and scrambling, but it's a cool mountain.
I decided to try the hollow and look for the sheep trail. I didn't find a trail that lasted. So I just went straight up. The top has a torn old flag and the most spectacular view of Mount Timp. The way I came up seemed less than Ideal so I decided to go down via SE ridge. I nearly landed right on top of a rattlesnake on my way to the Grove creek trail making this 2 of 2 for rattlesnake encounters.

Scouting it out...
I was interested in finding what the approach looked like from the Grove Creek Trailhead. The suggested ridge approach was even worse than it looked on paper. So I just went up to the spring. It really looks like the summit is better approached from the hollow or from the Timpooneke road at least if you had a 9 month old strapped to your back.

1-28-12 To Point 8905. With 12" to 18" of new snow obliterating what might have been traces of a trail, just getting to this point was a test of my will against not only the snow but the constant bushwhacking and the chilling northwest wind. I made it, but with the conditions being what they were I called it a day and look forward to another time for the other two points. #2 9-10-13 On a windy late summer day climbed all of the bumps and/or knolls en route to the flag-decorated South Summit. This is a nice little variation for the Central Wasatch area. I am not kidding when I say this trail is steep for the first 3500'. #3 5-2-15 To the northern peak. Saw a magnificent bighorn sheep near the north summit. #4 5-5-15 W/ Brent. All three summits. No flag on the pole at the high point.

Short and steep
Via the northwest ridge that starts at the golf course. First hit Point 8905, then North Mahogany Mt (Point 8926), and then Mahogany. The trail was easy to follow until about 8000' and then I lost it in the snow. It was miserably windy but other than that the weather was beautiful and it was a great end to 2011. Doing all 3 peaks was about 7 miles RT and a total elevation gain of about 4650'.
North Ridge - September 18, 2011 - Started from Timpooneke Road trailhead. A trail goes up to the ridge overlooking the valley. The traverse between the north and main summit is brushy if you get off route but not too bad.
Grove Creek - May 16, 2010 - This is a scenic route that follows Grove Creek. The off trail section above the waterfall is steep and loose. It was a hot day so it's probably better to do this in cooler weather.

Started from the Grove Creek Trailhead. Reached the summit via the southeast ridge of Mahogany. The climb up the scree was pretty miserable for the first couple hundred yards, then I found several game trails weaving everywhere. It was the first day of hunting season and all the hunters on Timpooneke evidently scared all the deer and elk up my way on up Mahogany ridge. Took two hours and 40 minutes to the summit and an hour and a half down. Didn't see anyone five minutes after leaving the trailhead. Views were great on top. Had the summit all to myself. 8.7 miles roundtrip.
Having worked 3 straight 12 hour days, I had neglected my dog and she was in need of a trip out and about, as was I. And having always wanted to hike Mahogany, and explore the Timpooneke road, we set out at 4:00 pm from home in Alpine. We got to a barricade at the end of a right fork off the Timpooneke road at 5:00 pm and decided this was as good a place to start as any. Because it is getting later in the year, and the sun is going down much sooner, I figured we needed to hurry. I summitted Mahogany and took a few pics with the flag at top at 5:42 pm. I'm tellin you, I wanted to beat the sun. And returned to my truck at 6:30 pm. Unfortunately I didn't have my GPS with me and so don't know the exact mileage, but it was a great hike, with fantastic views of Timp and Utah Valley. Will post pics soon.

Via SE Ridge
There really wasn't a great place to access the ridge after the bench, so we just went up the steep loose terrain in the direction of the ridge. It was very loose and I knocked off a boulder the size of a small TV and watched as it tumbled down to the trail below. There really isn't a trail from this point on, so just pick your way up the ridge. It was harder than I thought it would be, but it was a fantastic day and the views of Timp and Utah Valley are impressive.

I did it
Virtually the same elevation as Olympus to the north, this was a nice alternative to that mountain. There's got to be a better way up from the Grove Creek trail after the bench: the steep loose earth/rock shards scramble above the swollen creek just plain sux. Nice views on top.

SE Ridge
The trail along Grove Creek up to the bench where the scrambling begins is very picturesque. The view down to PG/Highland/Alpine from the peak is also nice.
