Route Climbed: West Ridge Date Climbed: December 1, 2005
Climbed with Nick Herrald from a camp at the head of the Bonney glacier. After a few days of climbing from Tasman Saddle hut, we walked down the Tasman glacier to Darwin Corner, cached some food/equipment, and headed up the Darwin and Bonney glaciers to a campsite at the base of the West Ridge. We left the tent at around 7AM and were on the summit at 11AM, after simul-climbing the entire route. We descended by downclimbing Fyfe's Couloir in 1.5 hours back to the tent. We spent the afternoon and evening in the tent and then headed down to De la Beche hut at 2AM after a marginal freeze. Definitely a very nice climb on one of New Zealand's classic peaks.
