via Kayser Mill  Sucess!

Two hours and thirteen minutes to the top. I had to reset the mailbox and build up the cairn a bit, since someone had put graffiti on one of the larger rocks. The mailbox was only precariously balanced so when I went to open it up the jar inside tumbled out and smashed to pieces. The one remaining mostly empty register is in a ziploc bag while the three completely full notebooks I mailed to the New Mexico Mountain Club. Took me a while to clean up all the glass shards I made and all the trash at the summit. I did some trail maintenance with a panga on the way down too, so all that is left is chainsaw work.

Windy  Sucess!

I hiked up via the Ox Canyon Trail. No water in any of the springs shown on the map in that canyon. Hiked along the Crest Trail to the peak. Spent some time reading the summit log, in which I noted the names of a couple of SPers. Then back and over to the Valencia County HP along the Salas Trail. Very high south winds. Then back to the Crest. Met three hikers heading down the Salas Trail to JFK Campground to complete a pretty large loop dayhike. I camped in the saddle near the intersection of the Crest and the Red Canyon Trail. High winds and snow overnight and into the morning. Hiked back to the trailhead via the Red Canyon Trail and Box Spring Trail. I figured 4500 ft accumulated elevation gain on this route. By Forest Service maps and trail markings, it was about 15.8 miles.

Ox Spring Trail  Sucess!

Left ABQ with Whitny, Nizhoni, and Matt around 11 am and eventually made our way to Red Canyon Trailhead. We saw the map at the start and decided on Ox Spring Trail instead so we drove down the road an extra 10 min. It took us 2 hrs 50 min to reach the summit and 2 hrs to get back. The was snow and lots of leaves on the ground. Luckily, the winds were weak and the sun hung on longer than expected.

Via Kayser Mill Trail  Sucess!

Hiked to the summit of Manzano Peak via Kayser Mill Trail. Some snow on the trail with lots of bear prints. Great view from the summit.

via Kayser Mill  Sucess!

As others said, hard to find the TH after the fire. Once we got going it was an easy and fun hike. LOTS of bear sign (scat and prints in the snow). Still some big snow drifts along the crest but not too difficult.

Pine Shadow Trail  Sucess!

Fun hike! Still pretty big snow drifts right up at the top, but they'll be gone shortly. Saw lots of hawks, cactus flowers and a bear. Summit register was labeled "Jack Burns" (Abbey's Brave Cowboy): nice touch.

Kayser  Sucess!

The start is hard to identify since the fire: the Kayser trail is the disused road (closed in one direction) at the high point of the main road. An easy hike, even if the trail wanders all over the hillside in idle switch-backing.

North Crest Trail  Sucess!

Went up Red Canyon and down the Kayser trail for a fantastic loop. What an area, so isolated and so close to home!
