Cheated in the Jeep  Sucess!

There was a bit of snow, plenty of wind and some wicked dizziness for the wife. Although the views and location were spectacular, we weren't able to linger.

High Point #2  Sucess!

Great drive up and small hike to the high point! Gorgeous views and got to do it with two friends. Watched the sunrise from the top and it was incredible, albeit cold. But we had a blast!

7.5 miles of walking, plus hitch hiking  Sucess!

Started up the Humuula trail from the visitor center. Got bored with the hike so I cut down to the road, and started hitch hiking. At mile post 2,5 I was picked up by Vaughn and Dyanne Beckman of Colorado Springs. Turns out they are fellow Highpointers. Reaching the summit of Mauna Kea I completed the task of reaching the highpoint of each of the 50 US States (spanned 20 years, but I did it!!!). From the summit I walked down to Lake Waiau, then cut back to the road. Walked down the road to mile post 2.0 where I finally managed to thumb a ride back to the visitor center. In total I walked 7.5 miles.

Hawaii State Highpoint  Sucess!

Started at the visitor center, 9200' to the summit. Descended the same way. Sacred summit. Be respectful. We had to put on micro spikes to ascend the last 100'.

Aloha and Mahalo  Sucess!

The mountain is no longer being blocked and is free to be climbed. We started at the visitor's center as the road was closed due to weather. Very straight forward hike. The last part is disappointing due to the number of telescopes in view as well as the paved road. All in all a great day on the mountain with my wife and friends.

What a view  Sucess!

A bit hazy that day, but otherwise everything I imagined...thin air and all. Drove to the top and walked the last few feet.

Side trip from volcanic caldera hike  Sucess!

Went to the big island to explore the lava flows. Hiked out to currently active caldera, which was in a pause between surface lava flows. Day hike turned into overnite, slept on ground warmed by subsurface active flows. Hiked from west side road access east then south to destroyed visitor center near the coast. The hike really tore up the vibram soles on my boots:)
Side trip drive to Mauna Kea. Summit hike with sandals.

HP #8  Sucess!

Came on my honeymoon, took a jeep all the way to the top, very cold, but great views where there wasn't fog. Looked a bit like another planet in places.

Aloha!  Sucess!

I hiked up from the visitor's center at 9300'. Poor planning on my part. I was headed to Waipio Valley and planned to buy sunscreen in Hilo, but realized I didn't bring my good camera, so I figured I'd do Mauna Kea instead and just use my iPhone camera. Because of that, I didn't buy the sunscreen, then proceeded to climb 4500' up the southern face of the mountain in the late morning. My ears suffered badly; please let me serve as a warning, not to climb without sunscreen.

Highpoint #27  Sucess!

Hiked from Visitor's Center. Sunny, warm, deathly quiet on the hike up through the Mars-like landscape. Great views, slightly windy and cooler on top!

What Views after a fogged in ascent  Sucess!

Drove to about 10,000 feet but rental car would not go higher. Got on the trail and hiked through fogged in morning to the lake, as clouds cleared, then on to summit. Could see all of Big Island, Maui, Lanai, Kahoolawe. Too exhausted after descent to camp at state park in the saddle so retreated to a motel in Waimea.
