McClellan attempt

Attempted McClellan Peak on an amazing day in September 2011. I ascended the ridge too far to the west and reached the ridge only to find a ~50-100 foot drop off on the south side of the knife edged ridge. It was apparent that to reach the summit the ridge must be gained farther east, then crossed to the south side and then a talus slope ascended to the true summit.

I was probably 300-400 feet lower than the true summit. I cooked a lunch meal on the knife edged summit and then enjoyed the hike out. While it was disappointing to fail to reach the summit, the views and weather were worth the hike. This was the best view of the core enchamtment lakes like Heart lake, Inspiration Lake, and Perfection Lake.

Standard Route  Sucess!

We found this peak to be very similar to Dragontail. The first section of our climb involved traversing a few relatively steep snow slopes (ice axes mandatory, microspikes/crampons highly recommended) up towards a tall rocky spire located directly below the true summit. To reach the top, you have to have to wrap around the South side of the peak; the north face is essentially a 1000' cliff. Pretty easy class 3 scramble with virtually no exposure. The summit register has been completely filled; it'd be nice if somebody could bring a small journal or some paper to replace it.

Long Day  Sucess!

We camped out below Little Annapurna and made our way to McLellan peak in the morning. It was a really fun scramble to the summit and boy was it worth it. The descent to the Snow Lakes trailhead was a grueling 7000 feet and ~9 miles.

Tiring Day  Sucess!

A bit tiring getting up so early for a long winded day. It was worthy however.

Mostly standard route

Date is approximate. Ascended first part of "standard" route from Crystal Lake, but crossed over to south face thru low spot in ridge. It was early season, was in area on another ski trip, so this seemed like a good choice when everything was deep in snow, worked well.

Route Climbed: South Face via Fantasia Pond drainage  Sucess!

Rob, Fletcher and I climbed up the west side of the valley draining Fantasia Pond for 3000 feet then crossed to its east side and passed well east of the pond itself. Continued up a gully heading straight for the summit. Summit block is a fun scramble. Last nice day of the year and a dusting of snow blanketed the Enchantments. Some larches still had color. Descended via Crystal Creek and reached the Ingalls Trail just when darkness came. Final 7 miles hike out in dark sucked. 13 hours and 22 miles with 6500 feet gain

OSAT Group Summit  Sucess!

Scramble from Leprechan Lake -- lots more snow than might be expected this late in the season--probably 1/3rd of the trek from the lake to the Prong was on snow. Summit register was found. Beautiful day - I used a summit shot with Snow Lake below as a facebook profile pic for a while.

Route Climbed: North Route (from Crystal Lake)  Sucess!

Combined with Colchuck, Dragontail, Witches Tower, and Little Annapurna all in the same day. Started from Colchuck trailhead. It was the last peak I did that day and I got on the summit at 8:45pm, just in time to see a spectacular sunset. Incredible view of the whole Enchantments.

Route Climbed: South scramble route from Crystal Creek Date Climbed: Aug 1973  Sucess!

A long hot day with not enough water until we found Fantasia pond. We scrambled up from the pond, following faint boot tracks. Nothing more than class 2 . (or low class 3 spot or two)

Unbelievable view of the whole area from the summit.

We couldn't find the summit register (I was told there was one) but we didn't stay for more than a few minutes at the summit as the day was getting short and we had no headlamps or flashlites with us (doh).
