Lake Marie Loop  Sucess!

I camped out at Nash Fork with my friends Jamie & Oscar, and their two dogs, Booker & Hattie. We did a loop from West Lake Marie trailhead. It was very windy all day, and there were clouds moving through all day, but it did not rain. There weren't too many people on the trail. When we got down from the mountain and down to the Lewis Lake/Lakes Trail junction, I climbed up Sugarloaf while Jaime & Oscar headed back to Lake Marie. I have been wanting to get up to the Snowy Range for a few years, and I am glad I did.

From Lewis Lake  Sucess!

Great hike on a beautiful morning - I can't think of many places that get you above 12,000 feet so easily! I also bagged the Carbon County Highpoint just SW of the summit...

To the top  Sucess!

This was probably the 7th or 8th trip up. But it was the first time in about 18 years. It was also the first time for my daughter and the others in the party. The sky had a few scattered clouds but there was very little haze, so visibility was unlimited. Everyone thouroughly enjoyed the short trek.

Lewis Lake  Sucess!

We camped near this area before heading to CO and NM. There was a school of kids hiking it the same day - crowded trail, but Greg and I had the summit to our selves. Very scenic area.

Climbed for our 15th & 19th wedding anniversary  Sucess!

October 18 2015:

Kessler, Shaylee, Kimberly, and I climbed Medicine Bow Peak in Wyoming today. It was very warm for October and I didn't even need a jacket on top. After enjoying the summit, we descended a bit and I wanted to climb Sugarloaf Mountain, but the others didn't. The others continued their descent while I climbed Sugarloaf Mountain. I didn't spend much time on top since clouds were gathering, so I descended as it started to thunder. There were some short lived snow pellets, but that was it. We saw several pikas on the hike and a fox in camp. It was a good climb.

August 11 2012:

Beautiful Kimberly and I climbed this mountain (again) for our 19th anniversary. We did the big loop hike from Lake Marie.

It was windy and cold going up and we had a brief lunch on the summit before it began to snow!! The snow was fine, but then it began to hail hard and rain, which made the rocks slippery. We made our way down the mountain until we found the snowfield in the photo where we could have our friendly annual anniversary snowball fight. After that we completed the beautiful loop hike passing by many spectacular lakes and seeing many pikas and a marmot.

After we were pretty wet from the hike, it was time to go back to the resort and eat dinner before soaking in the hot springs.

August 9 2008:

I have been informed that I’m probably working every weekend for the next couple months, but Kim and I had to break away to celebrate our 15th anniversary. We chose to climb Medicine Bow Peak in Wyoming since we went to Wyoming on our honeymoon and since I hadn’t climbed or attempted a peak in Wyoming since December 2001 even though we live only 40 miles from the border!

We drove to a lodge at Saratoga Hot Springs Friday evening in very heavy rain and were worried about the next day. Because of the weather we scrapped our plans of sleeping in and headed for the mountain early in the morning.

We had planned to do the entire loop hike starting at Lake Marie and ending at Mirror Lake while climbing over the top of Medicine Bow Peak, but we were worried about the weather, so we started the climb at Lewis Lake.

Medicine Bow Peak was a beautiful mountain and we climbed it in great weather. People on the summit informed us that they had snow and sleet on their hike the night before. The weather held for us all the way until we descended and just started driving back. Not long after that a severe thunderstorm hit the area and we high tailed it to Saratoga Hot Springs since the sky began to clear. Right after we changed went to soak in the hot springs though, a very severe thunderstorm hit so we got to spend less than a minute in the pools before having to get out. We drove home in heavy rain, but it was snowing on Battle Pass.

It was a great way to spend our 15th wedding anniversary.

Camped with my son and hiked the trail the next day. Very rocky trail but it was a spectacular day. A great peak in southern Wyoming.

Special Place  Sucess!

Being a UW graduate with a snowboard, the Snowys introduced me to steep chutes and I’ll never be the same. Too many memories… most with Fat Mat the wild man!

Lots of stories for such an easy mountain  Sucess!

I camped high on the ridge leading to Medicine Bow in June. In the middle of the night, I woke up because a marmot was nibbling on my toes through my sleeping bag. I moved my camp to the middle of a snow field, getting my socks wet in the process and setting them out to dry. They were gone in the morning with little marmot tracks all around. It's a long story, but I've been at war with marmots ever since they did $1000 worth of damage to my car. Anyway, on the traverse I came across a guy from Erie, PA who spent the night stuck between snowfields - afraid to cross the one ahead and afraid to recross the one behind. He was ready to call for help. I let him use my ice axe to summit, and am sure he made it down the other side OK.

Via Lewis Lake  Sucess!

Climbed this peak in the fall of 1995. Great summit...the views are fantastic. Some of my friends glissaded down the snowfields.

Nebraska Hikers Like Medicine Bow Peak Too  Sucess!

The hike up began about 8:00 AM, under mostly sunny skies. Chadron, Nebraska residents DeDe, Greg, and Tom took a little less than 2.5 hours to reach the summit from the Lake Marie West trail head. After visiting with some other hikers at the top, it took about 2 hours to complete the loop back to the trail head. Great photo ops all along the way (see gallery)! A great hike!

Josh & April's Wedding  Sucess!

Wound up in Saratoga Springs for the wedding - which didn't start until 6:30 PM. We thought we'd go for a little hike, but didn't realize how beautiful the Snowy Range was or how perfect the weather would be. We didn't know how far the loop was, but we went for it anyway and made it back just in time for the wedding. The day was simply fantastic. Best of luck Josh and April!

Quick hike on the way to Denver  Sucess!

I had read about the Medicine Bow area for a number of years before I finally had a chance to visit the area. This was a nice hike that was just long enough and fun enough to make my day. A wonderful area that is very accessible.

Route Climbed: Medicine Bow Peak Trail Date Climbed: August 2001  Sucess!

Great hike! There was still some snow on the top of the peak but it was packed down. Beautiful wildflowers along the route and great views of all of the Snowy Range from the top! We did the long loop from Lewis Lake, up to the peak, then back over to Lake Marie, then back up to Lewis.

Route Climbed: Medicine Bow Peak Trail/Loop Date Climbed: July 27, 2002  Sucess!

Climbed with Vagabond Manifesto and another friend. This was the first real mountain I had climbed. The views from the top were spectacular, though a little hazy in some directions. You can see for many miles. As V.M. said, it was extremely windy. Also, would like to point out that there tend to be thunderstorms every afternoon. We were rained on during the last half of our hike. I have experienced the same conditions on the southern end of the Medicine Bow Range in Colorado, so leave early in the morning. This is a good starter climb which will leave you wanting more.
