Via Mescalito Irregular Route  Sucess!

Climbed up 2 60-meter pitches of the Mescalito Regular Route. We didn't know we were supposed to take a right at that point so we kept going up. There were a lot of bail rap stations along the way. We found out why midway up the third pitch. The moves were 5.10a/b on cruddy sandstone. Awesome climb nonetheless. We reached the summit an hour before sundown. We were able to see the cairns all the way to the rap station on the northern descent.

North Fork  Sucess!

Awesome climb via the North Fork. The route finding is made simple with excellent cairnage.

Came down the South Fork and it was a different situation. Twice now I've had difficulty descending via this route -- maybe it's just me. The cairns are sparse, and in at least one case, some genius cairned a route from the top of one of the technical routes. It's close enough to the South Fork route that you can easily end up following that route down instead, where you'll cliff out and have to turn around.

Re: North Fork

I've heard there is a "sneak route" that descends off the South side much sooner than the normal route, so perhaps the cairns were for that. I ascended via the South so I had the benefit of knowing where I'd come from.

From the South  Sucess!

From Pine Creek, through South Fork, then to Mescalito canyon, then up. Retraced steps to descend. Tricky route-finding once I left the canyon up to the saddle, but there are a lot of options that all seem to go, and tons of cairns.

Cat in the Hat

I've climbed Cat in the Hat twice, but never gone to the summit of Mescalito. The first time was a bit more involved, as my partner and I had no idea what we were really doing.

The second time was a quick jaunt with SP member dunsum after we finished up Olive Oil and had some spare time in the afternoon.

Via Pine Creek Canyon  Sucess!

One of my favorite class 3 scrambles in Red Rock. We climbed up via Fern Canyon (North Fork of Pine Creek) and descended via Mescalito Fork and the South Fork of Pine Creek.
