Messix Peak

The elusive summit of Messix Peak seen from the northeast. It is the highpoint of the Promontory Mountains at 7,372 feet elevation. Messix Peak rises 2,400 feet above the northern end of the Great Salt Lake and is one of the Utah prominence peaks. The mountain is located on private land and permission must be granted to hike up it.

Is this a recent photo ???

One of the issues I always had with hiking
across sagebrush (in northern UT) during the
summer was the incredible array of TICKS that I picked up on my skin and clothing.

How do you handle "blood-sucking" insects?
Do you eat a special diet, or have you been
doing it for so long that it doesn't bother you ???

Yes, this was last weekend. I don’t like ticks and I doubt anyone else likes them either. They’re just something you have to get use to when living in the high desert. I haven’t been bit too many times so I guess I’m lucky.

Tick management

I know, I know--this was years ago. But there's a good answer to this: long pants treated with permethrin. You can buy permethrin spray pretty much anywhere (I got Sawyer brand at Wal-Mart; I've also seen Coleman brand.) Spray it on your pants and socks (and shirt and hat, etc.) Get them soaked. When it dries, your clothes will automatically kill any ticks, mosquitoes, black flies, etc. that touch your clothes. This treatment will usually last for at least a good half-dozen washes.

I've been using permethrin for the last couple years and had good results. I'm a mosquito magnet in summer but ticks don't really like me that much. The permethrin works well against them. I still bring bug spray for flies though. The main reason I didn't use permethrin before was because I used to have a cat and didn't want to have it around her.
