We spent the previous night at Chuprene village , hiding from the thunderstorm outside and during the next day started our hike from Gorni Lom.

Squeezed in after sunset
I got a ride that dropped me short of Babin Zub about 3pm. I figured I could still make it, as long as the trail was well marked. So I hit the road and covered 2-3 km before reaching a turn-off for a ski resort. I went straight up the slope and met a dirt road at the top of the hill. I followed the road basically to the summit, arriving after sunset and just as dusk became night. I spent 30 minutes wandering about the summit area and using up the battery on my light. I followed the road back to the ski resort. By the time I arrived, the grassy slope was slippery with freezing dew. I tried to get to the bottom without falling, then followed the road back.

Via Babin Zub and via Zarkova Cuka. It was a walk of 18.5 km with cumulated elevation gain of 927 m

Pleasant Hike on a nice day!
Easy and simple hike from "Babin zub" Mountain hut. Not particularly difficult, since most of the time you follow dirt road (I presume some old military one, since it is a border area) and ascend very gradualy, to the top.
Views are great and mountain itself is very green.
Worth of doing it.

Midzor (serbian side)
I climbed the normal route from Babin Zub Hotel. Some snow above 1900m. There's not much to climb but one should not underestimate distance to reach the top and take care about weather conditions.
A long path leads to the top (possibility to shorten the climb reaching the ridge directly on grass slopes).
There's also the possibility to spend the night in the very confortable 4 stars hotel Stara Planina (Flakensteiner) (sauna, swimming pool, gym etc...), price was reasonable (40 euros / person for night , breakfast lunch and dinner). From the hotel, a 5 to 10 mn drive enables you to reach Babin Zub (cheaper hotel there).

Midžor from Topli Do and returning via Babin Zub.
Solo ascent on hot summer's day. I arrived at my starting point of Topli Do and began my climb around eleven in the morning, having completed a five hour drive from Novi Sad, Serbia’s second city far in the north. From the village I followed an unmarked trail (sometime clear on the ground, often not) up to Cićeina Čuka and on to the Dugobilo spur before climbing steeply up the grassy mountain side to a better trail that then led to the roof of Serbia. By the time I began my descent from Midžor towards Babin Zub, the sun was becoming low in the summer sky. On arrival at Babin Zub ski resort I had planned to follow the crest of a spur down back down to Topli Do, thus completing a ridge top loop. But the path on the map seemed to have disappeared under the bulldozers developing the ski resort. Instead I took to a forest track that led me safely to my destination, though arriving after dark under the watchful eyes of the residence who sat talking and drinking with their neighbours outside in the warm evening air. Success!
The second time I tried to climb this peak, this time from the Serbian side. Nice hike, but a long drive. 10 miles, 850 m gain.

An Attempt from Bulgaria
Attempted to climb this one from the Bulgarian side because our rental car could not be taken to Serbia. Drove to Vidin for the night, and got a flat tire. Repaired that and drove to Gorni Lom the next morning. Tried to find the trail in the rain with little luck. Went to the town and asked some people about climbing the mountain. Nonody spoke Enlgish, but a man in the corner spoke Spanish. He translated that we could not climb the mountain without permission from Sofia, and that permission could not be obtained because it was the weekend. He also said that we would need a jeep to get to the trailhead and that the walk was 15 km and the weather was bad. He said that we could not go because we needed a guide...he kept saying "explosiva" and "boom", which made me think landmines? By this time the border police, in sweatpants and flip-flops showed up and told us to leave. An interesting day. If you have any info, I would love to attempt this peak from the Bulgarian side again. Thanks!
