Fun hike  Sucess!

From the pass, did Coronado as a warm up, then headed up Miller. Steep hike, reminded me of a southern CA type of outing. Great views. Wasn't able to go to the terminus of the AZ trail because of border wall construction (thanks a lot Trump, you asshole).

From Montezuma Pass  Sucess!

Aside from a Border Patrol truck the parking lot was empty just before dawn. Passed by one chap starting the Arizona trail but otherwise alone all day. The trail never gets very steep allowing for a steady climb. Two and a half hours up and two hours down on a bright, sunny day. I saved Montezuma Peak for my next trip here.

From Montezuma Pass  Sucess!

Nice hike with great views. Saw only 2 other hikers all day. I really like this part of the state. Felt safe the entire time. Outstanding view from the summit deep into Mexico.

Miller Peak  Sucess!

Started at Montezuma Pass and hiked the Crest Trail from there. At the TH you are only about 1 mile from the Mexican Border and the border patrol was set up in full force. Had the whole trail to myself the entire time, saw no other hikers or border crossers. Awesome views from the summit but didn't stay long as it was very cold and windy. Someone who had been up within a few days before me actually built a snowman on top right next to the summit cairn. First time seeing that on top of a peak. Once back down to the TH I went up Coronado Peak which it's short trail starts at the other end of the parking lot.

27 Peaks in 21 Days  Sucess!

This was part of a 21 day hiking road-trip I did with Heather. We chose the Lutz Canyon approach. It was F-ing freezing on the summit with intense wind. We also saw a lot of garbage from illegal immigrants inside a mine shaft. Other peaks on this trip include:

Pinos, Sawmill, Aliso, Signal, Castle Dome, Ajo, Superstition BM, Turtle HP, Old Woman, Granite, Cinder Cone 3894', Avawatz, Pahrump, Pinto, Nelson HP, Panamint Butte, Canyon Point, Shadow, Grapevine, Wahguye, Palmer, Stirling, Northshore, Black Mesa, Hamblin, and Little Virgin.

We also visited Heiroglyph Canyon, Marble Canyon, Cottonwood Canyon, Sheep Spring Canyon, Cadiz Dunes, Mojave Lava Tube, Parowan Gap Dinosaur tracks and numerous pertroglyph sites.

See the trip report with photos for more information.

Beautiful day in the Huachucas  Sucess!

Hiked from Ramsay Vista Campground tagging Carr Peak on the way. Clear skies, nice temperatures, and a little breezy. Saw two border agents, but no one else.

Carr Canyon  Sucess!

Biked up from the winter gate, then hiked the trail, tagging Carr along the way. It seems about the same amount of effort as Miller Canyon, but you get an extra peak for free. Trip report.

Lutz Canyon  Sucess!

not sure I would recommend this route. The trail in the lower canyon has been washed out quite a bit and even with some cairns, can be hard to follow. It is also overgrown with cacti and other thorny vegetation. It has also burned at some point so there is very little shade anymore. The upper half of the trail is still overgrown but not too bad. After the junction with the trail coming from Montezuma Pass, things are much more pleasant. No trash and did not see a soul on a Saturday. Pretty good summit views but a little on the windy side. I think that starting at Montezuma Pass is probably the way to go for this peak.

Really gneiss peak!  Sucess!

We were somewhat apprehensive re: climbing Miller Peak from Montezuma Pass...namely the history of illegal traffic and the trash they left behind. Our hike though, was awesome: no illegal activity & absolutely NO TRASH! We met one border patrol agent a mile up the trail & we had a brief chat...no recent illegal activity...he also was unaware of the "garbage junction" mentioned on this page.

Great hike, beautiful autumn day, cool summit w/ outstanding views!

We saw only one person all day- an Arizona Trail thru-hiker who just so happened to be finishing this day!

One final comment: a SPECTACULAR looking natural rock ARCH we spotted about 1.5 mi in, down between the ridges to the east of the trail. I googled for an hr & found absolutely no mention of it. It reminded me of Utah's Delicate Arch. To reach it I presumed a bushwhack from the road up an adjacent stream bed *(I saw water glistening near it at 8AM that morning.)would be the best approach attempt; if anyone is aware of its existence please contact me..I might go back & get close! My photo *(not great without a telephoto lens) is posted...check it out!

Trail clean now

Hiked from Montezuma Pass - trail very clean now. Felt safe parking at Montezuma Pass with all the border patrol parked there. Nicely laid out trail.

Slept up top.  Sucess!

Done with Wawa below me. The low didn't even hit freezing in December at 9,500'. Perfect end to an arduous journey.

Summit Slumber!  Sucess!

I slept on the summit during my final night on the Arizona Trail. Really amazing sunset, sunrise and nighttime views! It was not too windy to camp up there either. I did see a lot of discarded Mexican junk food though, with a trail up the other side of the summit from Mexico I think.

Via Montezuma Pass  Sucess!

Working out at Coronado NM and decided to bag Miller. Started from Montezuma Pass via the Crest trail, got up in a little over 1.5 hours, but it was hot. Up and back in 4 hours with time for a nice picnic on the summit. Only saw one other pair of hikers and a couple border patrol on the way back. Definitely one of the more trashed wilderness areas thanks to the UDA trash all over the mountain.
